The Colorado Avalanche began their official Stanley Cup Championship title defense as they opened up the 2022-23 season with a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night at Ball Arena. Prior to the game, the Avalanche commemorated their 2021-22 Stanley Cup victory and watched as their championship banner rose to the rafters.

Andrew Cogliano scored the first goal of the 2022-23 season for Colorado at even strength, while the power play went to work with four conversions with two power-play goals from Valeri Nichushkin and two power-play strikes from Artturi Lehkonen (2G, 1A). Mikko Rantanen dished out three assists, while Cale Makar handed out two helpers. Alexandar Georgiev made 15 saves on 17 shots in his official debut and first start for the Avalanche.
For Chicago, Jonathan Toews and Max Domi both scored on the power play, while Petr Mrazek made 30 saves on 35 shots.

GAME SUMMARY:

The Avalanche skated out with a dominant first period where they controlled most possession and outshot Chicago 12-4. After being denied in close by Mrazek, who made a high glove save on Nathan MacKinnon, the centerman circled to the top of the faceoff circles and threw a high shot on net. Cogliano redirected the shot, deflected off Mrazek's legs and trickled into the net at 13:44.
With just under five minutes left in the first frame, the Blackhawks netted the 1-1 equalizer on the power play off a quick passing sequence to breakdown Colorado's defense as Philipp Kurashev threaded a pass across the slot to Toews on the backdoor, where he buried the puck into the open net at 15:52 before Georgiev could slid across.
Shortly after Chicago tied the score up, the Avalanche went on the first power play of the game as MacKenzie Entwistle hi-sticked MacKinnon. Colorado's lethal power play picked up where it left off and converted. Rantanen sent a pass to the netfront and Nichushkin tapped the pass in with his stick to give the Avalanche a 2-1 lead at 17:07.
Lehkonen gave the Avalanche a 3-1 lead just 3:49 into the second period on the power play after Alec Regula took a hooking penalty at 3:00. Colorado executed a slick passing sequence from MacKinnon, to Rantanen and into the low slot to Lehkonen, where the Finnish winger put the puck through Mrazek's pads.
The Avalanche extended their lead 4-1 at 10:12 on another power-play conversion after Chicago's captain (Toews) went to the box for interference at 9:20. Colorado's power play zipped the puck around with another tic-tac-toe passing sequence and Lehkonen beat Mrazek from the slot for his second goal of the game.
Just 39 seconds into the third period, Lehkonen went to the box for hi-sticking. On Chicago's power play, they converted and trimmed their deficit down 4-1 as Domi beat Georgiev at 1:51.
The Avalanche power play converted for the fourth time late in the third period as Jujhar Khaira took a tripping penalty at 15:58. Nichushkin buried a feed from Makar at 17:03.
