Defeat on the Road

The Avalanche lost 2-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday. Valeri Nichushkin scored on one of Colorado's 38 shots on goal while Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar each picked up an assist. In net for the Avalanche, Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced.

"I can't fault our guys for the effort," Head Coach Jared Bednar said after the game. "I thought we were engaged right away from the drop of the puck. We had good jump and did a lot of really good things during that game."

How It Happened

Toronto's Auston Matthews opened the scoring on the power play at 28 seconds of the middle frame.

At 2:48 of the second period, Nichushkin tied the game on the power play with his 18th goal of the season via a one-timer from the slot set up by MacKinnon's backhand saucer pass. Nichushkin has now scored goals in three-consecutive games.

After a weird bounce on Toronto’s clearing attempt, Steven Lorentz gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead with a short-handed goal at 2:53 of the third period.
