Prospect Q&A: Travis Barron

Travis Barron was selected 191st overall in the seventh round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche and is getting ready for his first full pro season next year. The left-handed forward is 6-foot-1 and 201 pounds and helped the Colorado Eagles win the ECHL Kelly Cup in 2018.
The native of Brampton, Ontario, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Avs on March 29 and got his first taste of professional hockey at the end of last season. After concluding his four-year junior career last season with the Ottawa 67's, which included him being the team captain for the past two, Barron played two regular-season contests with the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League before joining the Eagles for their playoff run. He helped Colorado's ECHL affiliate win its second consecutive title after recording seven points (two goals and five assists) in 20 postseason contests.

He recently talked with the ColoradoAvalanche.com about winning a championship and his life away from the rink.
What was it like to win the Kelly Cup last season?
"It was pretty cool, especially as a young guy and that's your first taste of pro and you win a cup. It was very surreal, and I'm grateful for that."
How was it trying to adjust after joining the Eagles late in the year?
"Coming to a team that had been together all season and coming into the dressing room a game before the playoffs began was different. It was definitely a different feel, but they welcomed me. I'm so thankful for the coaching staff and players for how they treated me and made it an easy transition. We won a championship together, and I will remember them for the rest of my life."

What are you looking forward to this upcoming season?
"The jump to pro. I had a little taste of it last season at the tail end of it. It's exciting, and it's motivating."
Who were some of your hockey idols growing up?
"Growing up it was Mats Sundin; I was a huge Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Also, my cousin Cole (Cassels), who played in the AHL for the past three years. I've always looked up to him, and my uncle (Andrew Cassels), who played 1,000 games in the NHL. My dad as well since he played a little and taught me everything I know. So there are a lot of idols."
What is your favorite food?
"Currently, my favorite food is steak."

What is your best skill on the ice?
"Physicality. Separating guys from the puck and making plays."
What player would you say you base your game closest to?
"I don't know. Probably a player like Jamie Benn. Someone who is a big leader, gritty and can score."
What is your favorite activity to do in your free time?
"Either golf or playing Fortnite with my buddies."
What is your favorite hockey memory to date?
"Either winning the Kelly Cup or being drafted into the NHL. Both are two really good memories in my career."
