BLOG: Kubalik Nets OT Winner for Czech Republic Over Belarus

Dominik Kubalik played overtime hero for the Czech Republic and the Blackhawks' contingent of players added a new name on Monday as the 2021 IIHF World Championship continues in Riga, Latvia.

KUBALIK PLAYS HERO IN OT WIN

The Czech Republic got their first win of the tournament on Monday courtesy Kubalik's overtime winner at 1:23 of the extra frame. The forward created a breakaway with speed in transition and converted his look to capture the 3-2 victory for his country.

Kubalik has three points (2G, 1A) through three games, leading the Czechs in goals and tied for the lead in scoring.

GERMANY REMAINS PERFECT IN HAWK-HEAVY TILT

Lukas Reichel
hasn't signed his first NHL contract yet, but he faced off against a few potential future teammates on Monday in Riga as Germany took a 3-1 win over Canada to remain perfect on the tournament at 3-0-0.
The forward was held off the scoresheet for the first time in the competiton, but still ends day four tied for second in Worlds scoring with five points (2G, 3A). Brandon Hagel, Nicolas Beaudin and
Brandon Pirri
all appeared on the afternoon as Canada fell to 0-3-0 in their tournament slate. Hagel played 10:50 of ice time, Beaudin skated 12:51 and Pirri totaled 16:46 with three shots on goal as well.

RUSSIA, BLACKHAWK DUO FALL TO SLOVAKIA

Nikita Zadorov,
Maxim Shalunov
and the Russians fell for the second striaght game on Monday as Slovakia netted a pair of goals, one an empty netter, in the final seven minutes to take a 3-1 win.
Zadorov led his team with 25:33 of ice time with a second-most four shots on goal in the contest. Shalunov posted two shots in 16:10 of action on the day.

COMMESSO CALLED TO U.S. TEAM

A ninth Blackhawks-affiliated player will be joining the World Championship as 2020 second-round pick
Drew Commesso
was added to the U.S. roster on Monday morning. He replaces Anthony Stolarz, who was injured just 4:58 into Sunday's game and will miss the remainder of the tournamnt.
Commesso posted a 6-3-1 record with a 2.99 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 11 games during his freshman season at Boston University. He was slated to be part of the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team before becoming unavailable to participate due to COVID-19 protocols.

KURASHEV IN ACTION TUESDAY

Philipp Kurashev is expected to be the lone Blackhawks player in action on Tuesday as Switzerland looks to remain perfect agaisnt Sweden.
