The Blackhawks agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract with defenseman Ian Mitchell on Monday. The start date and AAV on the deal with the Blackhawks' second-round (57th overall) selection in the 2017 NHL Draft have yet to be determined due to the current pause of the 2019-20 National Hockey League Season.

Here are three things to know about Ian Mitchell:

Mitchell had a storied college career, capped by a strong 2019-20 season during which the junior had 10 goals and 22 assists in 36 games. The Pioneers' captain was named First-Team All-American, First-Team All-NCHC and was a finalist for NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year.

Mitchell was named the Pioneers' most valuable player as well as the most inspirational. In addition, Mitchell was on the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and was named an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.

After a sophomore season that landed him as a nominee for the 2019 Hobey Baker Award, given to the top NCAA men's ice hockey player, Mitchell was named captain for his junior season.

During his career at Denver, Mitchell appeared in 116 games, during which he had 18 goals, 71 assists, 89 points and a plus-minus rating of plus-41.

The Calahoo, Alberta, native has represented Canada internationally, including the 2019 World Junior U-20 Championships in Vancouver and Victoria, Canada. Mitchell had a goal and two assists in five games during the tournament.

Mitchell was also the youngest player on Team Canada's roster that captured the 2019 Spengler Cup. Mitchell had a goal and two assists while helping Canada capture the Cup. In the championship game, Mitchell scored a power-play goal as Team Canada defeated HC Ocelari Trinec 4-0 in Davos, Switzerland.

FAMILY TIES

Mitchell isn't the only member of the family to be drafted into the NHL. Roy Mitchell, Ian's uncle, was selected by the Canadiens in the ninth round (188th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft.

Roy Mitchell appeared in three games in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars during the 1992-93 season. Also a defenseman, Roy Mitchell didn't record a point in those games and found more glory in the AHL where he played in 333 career games and had 17 goals and 70 assists. Roy Mitchell was selected to the 1995 AHL All-Star Game.
