The Western Hockey League announced on Tuesday afternoon that Blackhawks prospect and Seattle Thunderbird defenseman Kevin Korchinski was named the WHL U.S. Divison's Defenceman of the Year. He was also named a finalist for the WHL's Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy for WHL Defenceman of the Year.

Through 54 games this season, the 18-year-old notched 11 goals and 62 assists for a career-high 73 points and accumulated a plus-50 rating. His 62 assists led all Western Conference blueliners and ranked third on the Thunderbirds in points.

After a four-game sweep against the Kelowna Rockets, he posted three assists to help the team advance. Korchinski and Seattle will go against the Prince George Cougars in the second round of the WHL playoffs. The two will kick things off on Friday, April 14.
