The Blackhawks stormed back in New Jersey to capture the first point of the season in overtime, but Jack Hughes and the Devils were too much to handle on Friday night, with the third-year center scoring twice in a 4-3 overtime win.
Alex DeBrincat, Dominik Kubalik and Kirby Dach scored the tallies for Chicago on the night -- Kubalik's second in as many games -- and Kevin Lankinen made 26 stops in his first start of the season.

1st - 0:17 - Dougie Hamilton (Ryan Graves, Jesper Bratt)

The Devils capitalized on an opening-shift turnover by the Blackhawks just inside their own blue as Jesper Bratt poke checked Jake McCabe and quickly found Ryan Graves along the wall. Graves hit the trailing Dougie Hamilton in the high slot and the defenseman put a wrister past Kevin Lankinen for a 1-0 lead.

2nd - 0:51 - Alex DeBrincat (Patrick Kane, Tyler Johnson) -- PP

For the second game in a row, the Blackhawks power play opened the scoring for the visitors, this time as Patrick Kane fed Alex DeBrincat for each's first point of the season. After nearly a minute of offensive zone time on the man advantage, the wingers set up on opposite bottoms of the circles while Jonathan Toews and Tyler Johnson occupied traffic in front, allowing a cross-slot saucer pass from Kane to get all the way to DeBrincat, who popped a one-time bid into the gaping net from a low angle for a 1-1 tie.

2nd - 17:58 - Jack Hughes (Janne Kuokkanen)

Jack Hughes gave New Jersey the lead back late in the middle frame off an individual effort from start to finish. The top pick in the 2019 draft won a puck back behind the Blackhawks net, attempted a centering pass that was blocked and then picked up the loose change while driving towards the slot. Hughes spun in the slot and quickly fired a shot through bodies in front, eluding Lankinen for a 2-1 advantage.

3rd - 6:34 - Andreas Johnsson (Dawson Mercer, Tomas Tatar)

The Devils doubled their lead off a keep at the point in the third period to make it 3-1. Dawson Mercer's shot hit the post and a hard-charging Andreas Johnsson crashed the crease and popped home the rebound before Kevin Lankinen could cover the loose puck in his crease.

3rd - 16:07 - Kirby Dach (Tyler Johnson, Patrick Kane) -- PP

Chicago got on the board again during the back half of a Dawson Mercer high sticking penalty to make it a one-goal game, 3-2. Kirby Dach found the net for the first time on the season on the second rebound in tight on the man advantage. Patrick Kane's shot from the point was turned aside, as was Tyler Johnson's rebound attempt at the edge of the blue paint, but Dach at the side of the net was able to make it third time the charm to pull within one.

3rd - 19:34 - Dominik Kubalik (Brandon Hagel, Seth Jones)

The Blackhawks tied the game in the final minute of play off a keep at the blue line by Seth Jones. The defenseman quickly found Brandon Hagel in the high slot in transition, who immediately hit Dominik Kubalik at the side of the cage for a one-time tally and a 3-3 scoreline with a shade more than 25 ticks left on the clock.

After the Blackhawks forced overtime, Jack Hughes sealed the second point for the home team in the opening minute of the extra frame with a show of skill, dekeing Kevin Lankinen on the rush before putting a backhander into the empty cage for a 4-3 win.
