The Blackhawks turned the tide in the third period following that goal and piled on plenty of chances. However, Kings goaltender Cal Petersen stood tall between the pipes in his first career NHL start.
For the eighth time this season the Blackhawks saw a game go beyond regulation. A scoreless third period resulted in the game being decided in a skills competition.
Ilya Kovalchuk and Anze Kopitar each scored for Los Angeles to secure the victory. Toews and Patrick Kane were both stopped.
POWER-PLAY STALLS:The Blackhawks had their opportunities to get on the board in the second period. They were awarded three straight power plays between 8:10 and 15:11 of the frame. However, they were unable to capitalize as the Kings kept them off the board.
LINE SHUFFLING PAYS OFF:Head Coach Jeremy Colliton shuffled the lines in the middle frame and put Saad with Toews and Kane. The line drew a penalty in the second, and then Saad scored in the third to even things up.
TALKING POINTS:
"It was definitely a slow start. We've got to play a full 60 minutes to win hockey games. I think it shows some character how we battled back in the third and then in overtime we had some chances and some puck possesion. When it comes down to a shootout, it could be anyone's game. But the message for us is just to play a full 60."- Brandon Saad on the shootout loss to LA
WHAT'S NEXT: The Blackhawks conclude this three-game homestand on Sunday against the Minnesota Wild at 5 p.m. CT. The game is Hockey Fights Cancer night for Chicago. There will be a special Purple Carpet event, a ceremonial puck drop, fundraising opportunities and much more to help spread awareness and aid in the battle against cancer.
