THREE THINGS: Get to Know Cam Morrison

The Blackhawks have once again dipped into the collegiate free agent pool, signing Notre Dame senior Cam Morrison to a two-year entry-level contract on Tuesday.

Originally a 2016 second-round pick (40th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche, the 22-year-old forward joins the organization after posting 20-point campaigns in each of his four years at Notre Dame.

Here are three things to know about the newest member of the Blackhawks:

CLUTCH PERFORMER

In 20 career playoff contests with Notre Dame over his four seasons, Morrison scored 10 goals and five assists, including several big-time contributions.

The forward scored the game-winning goals to clinch Notre Dame's last two Big Ten championships, first an overtime winner against Ohio State to capture the 2018 title and then the eventual game-winner over Penn State in 2019. His two game-winners are tied for the Big Ten Tournament all-time record and Morrison earned All-Tournament Team honors in both seasons.

In NCAA tournament play, Morrison also rose to the occasion for the Fighting Irish. As a freshman in 2017, he scored both regulation goals -- including a game-tying tally with five minutes to play -- as Notre Dame punched its ticket to the Frozen Four in Chicago. The team fell in the semifinal at the United Center to eventual-champion Denver with Morrison scoring the lone goal in a 6-1 defeat.

In 2018, Morrison posted the primary assist on the game-winner that sent Notre Dame to the national championship game. In 2019, he scored the overtime game-winner to send Notre Dame to the NCAA Northeast Regional final.

POWER FORWARD

At 6-foot-2, 214 pounds, Morrison brings more size to the Blackhawks prospect pool, but he brings plenty of skill as well. In 149 games at Notre Dame, he scored 95 points (44G, 51A), including career highs in goals (13) and points (27) during his senior season. Morrison was named Notre Dame's offensive player of the year, leading the Fighting Irish in goals and finishing second in points. He also finished had three multi-point games and registered a team-leading plus-10 rating.

ROOKIE SUCCESS

In his last two stops, Morrison has wasted no time making an impact right away.

As a freshman at Notre Dame in 2016-17, the forward led all Fighting Irish rookies with 12 goals and 12 assists in 40 games, finishing fifth in team scoring. Morrison's 24 points put him two points ahead of Blackhawks defenseman Dennis Gilbert that year, the first of two seasons the two played together in South Bend.

Before joining the Irish, Morrison spent one season with the USHL's Youngstown Phantoms, recording 66 points (34G, 32A) in 60 games. He was named the USHL's Rookie of the Year with his 34 goals and 66 points pacing all USHL rookies that season. His 34 goals also ranked third among league skaters. Morrison was named a First Team USHL All-Star and was selected to the All-Rookie First Team.
