By the numbers: A look at the 2022-23 season for the Blue Jackets
Despite a tough campaign, Columbus had some bright spots throughout the year
Columbus set a franchise record with 563 man-games lost to injury, and if a number came to define the campaign, it would be that one. Star wing Patrik Laine suffered an elbow injury in the second period of the opener, veterans Zach Werenski, Jakub Voracek and Justin Danforth were lost to season-ending injuries in the first 13 games, and just about every player to pull on the CBJ sweater had to miss time at some point during the campaign.
At the same time, even in a campaign in which the Blue Jackets finished with the second-worst points percentage in team history, there were numbers to celebrate. Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson helped rewrite the team's rookie record book, while Johnny Gaudreau lived up to the billing with one of the most productive seasons in team history in his first year in Columbus.
Here's a look at the 2022-23 season by the numbers.
74
With 74 points, Gaudreau placed fifth all-time in team single-season annals, behind only Artemi Panarin (87, 2018-29; 82, 2017-18), Rick Nash (79, 2008-09) and Ray Whitney (76, 2002-03). His 53 assists also placed fourth in team history, and he is just the fourth CBJ player to have at least 50 helpers in a season (Panarin, 59, 2018-19; Voracek, 56, 2021-22; Panarin, 55, 2017-18; Whitney, 52, 2002-03). When combined with Voraceks a year ago, this marks the first time in franchise history that two different players had 50-plus assists in back-to-back seasons.
20
Gaudreau finished his first season in union blue with 20 multipoint games, which placed third all-time in team history. Panarin has the team record with 25 in 2018-19, while Nash had 24 in 2008-09. Gaudreau's five-point game March 14 at San Jose was the sixth in team history.
21
Marchenko might have been the brightest spot in the campaign, as the effervescent Russian posted 21 goals to reset the team's rookie goal-scoring record, passing Pierre-Luc Dubois' previous mark of 20 set in 2017-18. Even more impressive is the fact Marchenko did it in 59 games, while Dubois needed all 82 to reach the 20-goal mark. Marchenko's seven power-play goals also tied the CBJ rookie record, first set by Jaroslav Balastik in 2005-06.
4
Marchenko also finished with just four assists in his rookie campaign, making him the second player in the NHL's modern era to finish a campaign with at least 20 goals and as few as four assists. Previously, Florida's Brandon Pirri posted an incredible 22-2-24 stat line during the 2014-15 season. Marchenko had 17 more goals than assists, a total that has been surpassed by only Nash (41 goals, 16 assists, 2003-04) in team history. Marchenko also became the only CBJ player in history to score at least 15 times in a season with less than 10 assists.
40
Johnson's 40-point campaign was the third in Blue Jackets history for a rookie, following in the footsteps of Dubois' 48-point campaign in 2017-18 as well as Zach Werenski's 47 points the year prior. Johnson posted 16 goals and 24 assists, placing him tied for fourth in CBJ history in rookie goal scoring and fourth alone in assists among rookies. Johnson also placed sixth among NHL rookies in goals, eighth in assists and fifth in points.
20
Columbus iced 20 players who were classified by the NHL as rookies, from Daniil Tarasov in the opening game to nine different players -- Johnson, Marchenko, Liam Foudy, Tim Berni, Hunter McKown, Tyler Angle, Stanislav Svozil, Mikael Pyyhtia and Samuel Knazko -- in the season finale vs. Buffalo.
120
Those rookies -- 18 of whom are skaters -- combined to post 55 goals, 65 assists and 120 points, all CBJ team records. Those 55 goals by rookies are the most in the NHL this year, and the point total placed second to Montreal. This was also the third time in team history that the Jackets had two rookies with at least 10 goals; the previous instances were 2000-01 (Serge Aubin and David Vyborny, each with 13) and 2016-17 (Dubois with 20 and Sonny Milano with 14).
47
The 47 players used in a season also set a Blue Jackets record, as did the fact the team iced six different goaltenders. Amazingly, only one of them -- Jet Greaves -- played in just a single game. At this moment, he is one of four goalies in team history to play in just one game, joining David LeNeveu (2011), Shawn Hunwick (2012) and Veini Vehvilainen (2021). In addition, 11 players made NHL debuts during the season.
657
Captain Boone Jenner continued to move up the team records books this season, finishing the year with 657 games played, second in team history behind only Nash. Jenner became just the fourth player in team history to skate in 10 different seasons, joining Cam Atkinson, David Savard and Rostislav Klesla, and is set to break that record next year. He is also just 17 games behind Nash for the most in team history, a record he can break early next season, and Jenner's 329 points are five behind Nick Foligno for third all-time in scoring.
20
Jenner posted a team-high 26 goals on the season to give him three 20-goal seasons in his CBJ career. He joins Vyborny, Nash, R.J. Umberger, Cam Atkinson and Oliver Bjorkstrand as the only Blue Jackets with three or more such seasons.
197
With 197 shot blocks on the season, Andrew Peeke set a new team record since the stat has been tracked starting in the 2005-06 campaign. Ryan Murray held the previous record with 171 in 2015-16. Peeke also finished third in the NHL behind Vegas' Alec Martinez (244) and Brayden McNabb (198).
13
The Blue Jackets' 7-6 win at Washington on March 21 stood out for a number of reasons. It was just the third victory in team history in which the Jackets gave up at least six goals, while Columbus got a tying goal from Jenner in the final minute then won on Jack Roslovic's overtime tally. That made it just the 13th time in 22 seasons of hockey that the Blue Jackets tied a game in the final minute of regulation, then went on to win in the overtime or shootout.
22.9
After a slow start to the season, the Blue Jackets were one of the best teams in the NHL on the power play over the last three months. From Jan. 21 through the end of the campaign, a 37-game span, Columbus went 21 for 105 (22.9 percent) on the power play. That percentage placed eighth in the league in that time.
11
Liam Foudy and Eric Robinson became the 10th and 11th players in team history to play at least 60 games in a season and finish with single digits in penalty minutes. Robinson had six PIM in 72 games, while Foudy had eight penalty minutes in 62 games. Robinson is just the fourth player in team history to skate in at least 70 games and finish with six penalty minutes or less.
19,004
The listed attendance of 19,004 fans at Nationwide Arena for the Feb. 25 game vs. Edmonton was the 24th crowd of more than 19,000 fans in team regular-season history. The Blue Jackets sold out 14 games of 40 games in Nationwide Arena, including eight of the last nine.
