The Blue Jackets missed a big chance Thursday night to make up ground on Washington, and now the team is 13 points back of a playoff spot with 20 games to go.
Head coach Brad Larsen didn't make any bones about putting a lot into that game, but just because the Jackets didn't get the result, that doesn't mean they can let off the gas pedal in
tonight's 5 p.m. game against St. Louis in Nationwide Arena
.

"We need to win," Larsen said pregame. "I don't expect anything different. We've been playing good hockey for six or seven weeks now. We've put a lot of hard work in and I'd hate to see that go away. We can't afford to dial it back 10 percent as far as effort and competitiveness.
"That's going to be our challenge, to keep focusing. I'll be pushing. I will. We've talked about it, our staff. I think we have a good group in there. I think they know what is expected, and I think they enjoy playing for each other and that's what we have to do."
Besides, until the door is closed on a postseason berth, there's still plenty of play for.
"You never know, right?" Larsen said. "You go on a five- or six-game win streak and the other team doesn't, you could be right back in the picture."

3 Keys to the Game

Bring the physical play: St. Louis is a heavy team to play against, so the Jackets have to match that intensity.
Eliminate mistakes: The Blue Jackets made some whoppers on Thursday night, something that should serve as a lesson going forward.
Special teams: It's always key, but the Blues are among the tops in the league in both power play and penalty kill. You just can't lose the game here.
