What They're Saying

The Blue Jackets know they have to be better. At the same time, they expect themselves to be better, too.
It's been a rough road to start the season, with Columbus winning just three of its first nine, including three-goal losses against veteran teams like Tampa Bay, St. Louis and Pittsburgh. The latest such setback took place Friday night in Nationwide Arena, as a Boston team that has won eight of its first nine took a 4-0 victory against Columbus.
While the Blue Jackets believe in their young core's potential not just for this season but for years to come, there have been some growing pains thus far against the league's top teams.
"We're learning lessons, and sometimes that gets tough to keep saying, but you're learning against these top teams," Sean Kuraly said. "You give them an inch, they take a mile, and the game can get behind you before you even know it. We're going to learn from these good teams. Our plan is to stop some of those mistakes as soon as we can, and I think it's going to take every single guy. We know we have to be better in this room."
To a man, that was the message from the Blue Jackets after the Boston game. It's far too early in the season to panic, and the belief is better days are ahead as long as the team sticks together.
"We are all together in this," Merzlikins said. "I am pretty sure we are going to get out of this. I hope as soon as possible because later it is going to be too late. I believe in my team. I believe we can get to playoffs. We are a playoff team. If you don't believe it, it's up to you, but I do believe in my team. I believe in my guys. I know we can play hard and we can play good. We are going to get to that point."

Know The Foe: New Jersey Devils

Head coach:Lindy Ruff (Third season)
Season Stats:Goals per game: 3.00 (23rd) | Scoring defense: 2.75 (6th) | PP: 17.4 percent (23rd) | PK: 92.6 percent (4th)
The narrative:A proud franchise has just one playoff appearance in the past 10 seasons, but the fruits of a long-term rebuild appear to be coming due. Young talents Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier -- both No. 1 overall picks -- are joined by building blocks Jesper Bratt and Dawson Mercer for a squad that feels it's time to return to postseason play.
2021-22 leaders:Bratt is one of the most underrated young players in the game, and he led the way for the Devils last year with a 26-47-73 line, while Hischier added 21 goals and 60 points. Hughes was on the way to a point-per-game season but had his year cut short by injury, posting 26-30-56 in 49 games. Yegor Sharangovich added 24 goals and six others posted double digits. The weakness was in net, as New Jersey didn't see a single goalie play more than 25 games thanks to injury and posted a team GAA of 3.52.
What's new:For the second straight season, the Devils weren't afraid to dip into the free agent market. Whereas it was Dougie Hamilton added in the summer of 2021, two-time Stanley Cup champion forward Ondrej Palat was added to bring in more offensive depth. New Jersey was also active in the trade market, adding forward Erik Haula from Boston, defenseman John Marino from Pittsburgh and goalie Vitek Vanecek from Washington.
New Jersey enters having won five of six, including a 1-0 blanking of Stanley Cup champion Colorado on Friday night, but the team got bad news yesterday as Palat went on injured reserve. Bratt is off to a hot start, with his 3-10-13 line placing him tied for second in the NHL in assists and alone in fourth in points. Hischier (3-4-7) and Hamilton (2-5-7) are next in scoring, while Palat, Hughes and Mercer each have three goals apiece.
Trending:Columbus has had plenty of recent success in the series including a 3-1 record a season ago. In all, the Blue Jackets have gone 19-4-1 in the series since 2015-16 and 9-2-1 at "The Rock" in that time.

3 Keys to the Game

Don't panic: The Jackets have put together solid stretches throughout games, but playing a full 60 minutes has been an issue. Handling the ups and downs of the game better will be key.
Do the little things: The big things don't matter as much the little things like good sticks and battles won along the wall. Once those happen, everything else falls into place.
Neutral zone: Larsen talked after practice Saturday of the Jackets winning more battles in the neutral zone, which then leads to more possession and better play.

3 Stats to Know
  • Columbus has 15 goal scorers on the season, tied for second with Boston among NHL teams (Vegas leads the league with 16).
  • The Blue Jackets have played just a single one-goal game this year, the team's 4-3 overtime victory last Tuesday against Vancouver. Columbus is 2-0 in one- or two-goal games.
  • Milestone watch: Boone Jenner is set to play in his 599th game with Columbus, which will tie Nick Foligno for third in team history. … Gustav Nyquist is one point away from 100 (35-64-99) in his CBJ career. … With one more goal, Zach Werenski will tie Ryan Johansen for ninth in CBJ annals with 79 tallies.
Who's Hot

Kent Johnson has three goals in the last four games and had a four-game point streak snapped by the Bruins. … Jack Roslovic has a 1-3-4 line in the past four games. … Andrew Peeke has two goals in the last three games. … The Blue Jackets have 15 different goal scorers on the season and 20 different players with at least a point. … Columbus has seven goals from defensemen on the season, tied for first in the NHL with the Panthers and Islanders.
