What They're Saying

The Blue Jackets turned in plenty of good minutes in Tuesday night's 4-1 loss at Pittsburgh, but it wasn't enough as the veteran Penguins were able to score three times in the opening 10-plus minutes of the second period to overturn an early 1-0 CBJ lead and pull away.
Afterward, if there was a consistent message from the Blue Jackets players, it was that sticking with their game throughout an entire contest is something this young team has to learn.
"The good teams are never done after one period," Sean Kuraly said. "I hate to say it, but (one good period) doesn't mean (anything). You have to move on. After good and bad periods, you gotta move on and you have to play for 60 minutes in this game or you're not going to win games."
"It seems to me the story here is we just have to play a full 60 minutes, play consistent," Cole Sillinger echoed.
It's something any team has to learn as it tries to move up the ranks in the NHL, and it's a particularly difficult thing for the Blue Jackets to achieve at the moment. Columbus has one of the youngest lineups in the league, and the group got even younger with the NHL debuts Tuesday night of wing Kirill Marchenko and defenseman Tim Berni.
Seven of the 18 skaters in the lineup for the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night have played less than 100 career NHL games, which means there's going to be ups and downs as players experience new things. It's not an easy process to get through, but it is one the Blue Jackets have to live with at the moment.
"It's the stuff that we hurt ourselves with, that's the frustrating part," head coach Brad Larsen said. Postgame. "We're asking a lot of some guys. We know (Pittsburgh is) a good team, but some of the simple stuff when they get it to 2-1, I could run through it all, but yeah, we hurt ourselves a lot. They're going to get their opportunities, and we just find a way to sting ourselves."

Know The Foe: Buffalo Sabres

Head coach: Don Granato (Second season)
Season Stats:Goals per game: 3.80 (2nd) | Scoring defense: 3.68 (28th) | PP: 27.4 percent (5th) | PK: 70.6 percent (27th)
The narrative:The Sabres haven't made the postseason since 2010-11 but there's a renewed optimism in Buffalo with a young core in place and the Jack Eichel saga behind the team. Young stars Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, Dylan Cozens, John-Jason Peterka and Jack Quinn lead the way along with local boy Alex Tuch as the core of what could be a contender is coming together.
2022-23 leaders: Thompson is proving last year's 38-goal season was no fluke as the UConn product leads the way with a 16-18-34 line this season to place tied for sixth in the NHL in goals. Dahlin, the No. 1 overall pick in 2018, has come into his own with eight goals and 21 helpers for 29 points, second among NHL defensemen, while veteran Jeff Skinner has 12 goals among his 27 points. Tuch (12-12-24) and Cozens (9-15-24) are next as the Sabres have an offense that can hang with anyone.
Defensively, the team has had its issues, and that's reflected in the goaltending numbers. Eric Comrie has started the most games (11) and is 4-7-0 with a 3.62 GAA and .887 save percentage, but is out with a lower-body injury. Veteran Craig Anderson (5-4-0/2.87/.916) and youngster Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (2-2-1/4.18/.856) also have seen time.
What's new:You get excitement when you play the Sabres, as the team boasts one of the best offenses but some of the worst defensive numbers in the league. Buffalo is 4-2-1 in the last seven games, scoring 34 goals in that span but allowing 26.
Trending:Columbus swept the three-game season series a year ago and is 10-3-2 against the Sabres over the previous six seasons.
Former CBJ:None

3 Keys to the Game

Get on the board: Obviously you need to score to win games, and Columbus has just 11 goals in the last six contests. Buffalo has some of the worst defensive numbers in the league, so there's a chance to change things here.
Secondary scoring: A key part of this is getting tallies from outside of the team's top line. That has dried up during the recent struggles; the Jackets need their depth to stand up.
Stay with it: The Sabres' high goal-scoring and goal-allowing totals show this is a team that has a lot happen in games. The Blue Jackets have to be able to handle the ups and downs.

3 Stats to Know
  • Johnny Gaudreau has been producing at an impressive clip, posting a 3-9-12 line in the last seven games and notching four goals and 14 assists for 18 points in the last 11 games.
  • Tuesday night's debuts of Marchenko and Berni means 34 players and 31 skaters have suited up for the Blue Jackets this season in 24 games. For comparison, last year 36 players and 32 skaters wore union blue in an 82-game season.
  • Milestone watch: Sean Kuraly is set to play in his 100th career game with the Blue Jackets.
Who's Hot

Boone Jenner has 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in the last 14 games. … He became the fifth CBJ player to reach 300 career points with the team on Friday, joining Rick Nash, Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno and David Vyborny. ... With six goals and 13 points, Kent Johnson is tied for fourth and seventh, respectively, among NHL rookies. … Twenty-one different Blue Jackets have scored goals on the season, second most in the NHL behind Detroit. Seventeen of those players have multiple goals. ... With the CBJ's two overtime winners, Vladislav Gavrikov is just the fourth Blue Jackets defenseman to have multiple overtime goals in a season.
