What They're Saying

The Blue Jackets complete a quick turnaround with two games in under 48 hours with today's game against the Oilers, and Columbus looks to rebound from Thursday night's 2-0 loss against Minnesota.
It was an odd game, as the Blue Jackets gave up two goals in the first 10 minutes to complete the scoring. The Jackets might have been a bit rusty after not having played since Sunday, and the team did settle in as time went on, but it couldn't get on the board despite 70 total shot attempts and 30 that hit the mark against Marc-Andre Fleury.
"You take away the first 10-12 minutes, we're OK," head coach Brad Larsen said. "But we were sleeping (early). Too many turnovers and mismanagement. We give up a silly 2-on-1 to their most dangerous line, which doesn't have to happen. Now you're chasing the game. We out-chanced them the last 50 minutes of the game 12-9. We didn't give up much after that, but the damage was done. They're a hard-defending team, and you've dug yourself a hole."
Being ready to go at the start today might be of the utmost importance. This is just the third of five games on the schedule that will be a matinee based on the local time, so being ready at the start will be key.
The bigger issue, though, will be taking on Connor McDavid. The NHL's leader in points by a wide margin, McDavid is on pace for his third career Hart Trophy as well as in the hunt to become the first player to notch 150 points in a season since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96.
"He's lethal anytime he's on the ice," Larsen said. "You have to know when he's on the ice, and even when you know he's on the ice, he has a gear that we haven't seen before. His skating, what he can do at full speed, shoot, pass, he has all of it."

Know The Foe: Edmonton Oilers

Head coach:Jay Woodcroft (Second season)
Season Stats: Goals per game: 3.81 (1st) | Scoring defense: 3.24 (21st) | PP: 32.2 percent (1st) | PK: 75.0 percent (26th)
The narrative: It's another season where the talents of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have shone brightly, but one again wonders how far they can take the Oilers. A season ago, the two were able to get Edmonton into the Western Conference Final for the first time as a duo, but Colorado quickly ended the Oilers' season there. Some of the same issues -- scoring depth and defensive question marks -- that have precluded the Oilers from hoisting the ultimate prize remain, but a team that has two of the top players in the league has the ability to run any team off the ice.
2022-23 leaders:You have to start with McDavid, who is turning in perhaps the best season yet in what has become an incredible career. The 26-year-old is threatening to turn the scoring race into a laugher, as he already has a ridiculous league-best total of 46 goals in 59 games, not to mention an NHL-best 109 points. Draisaitl is second in the league in scoring with 87 points thanks to 35 goals and 52 assists, and his 22 power-play tallies lead the league. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is next with a 28-44-72 line, while Zach Hyman has 27 goals and 68 points.
In net, Stuart Skinner has turned in an All-Star season, as he was in South Florida thanks in part to a 15-11-4 record, 2.89 GAA and .913 save percentage in 32 games. Jack Campbell is 17-8-4 with a 3.39 GAA and .887 save percentage.
What's new:Things are trending upward for the Oilers, who at one point this season were on the wrong side of the playoff line. Edmonton has points in 18 of its last 20 games, going 12-2-6 in that stretch to gets securely on the right side of the line. The Oilers have 87 goals in that span, an average of 4.35 per game, and are connecting at 32.3 percent on the power play in that time. Injuries have started to pile up, though, with Evander Kane (upper body), Klim Koston (illness) and Ryan Murray (back) out of late along with long-term injuries to Oscar Klefbom and Mike Smith.
Trending:Columbus had won just two of eight against the Oilers before taking a 3-2 overtime victory Jan. 25 in Alberta on Kent Johnson's game-winning goal.
Former CBJ:Devin Shore has played in 32 games with a 1-4-5 line, while Murray has skated 13 contests with three helpers as well.

3 Keys to the Game

Stay out of the box: Edmonton is currently on pace to set an NHL record for power-play percentage. Against this team, if you take penalties, you will pay.
Play in fives: Of course, that's easier said than done when such players as McDavid and Draisaitl are on the ice. If someone gets in a one-on-one situation with those stars, it's a recipe for disaster. Defending has to be done as a team.
Make your own plays: The Blue Jackets have some pretty talented players, too. Sometimes, the best defense is a good offense, especially against a team that can give up goals. Get the puck to the net and then battle to get it home.
