What They're Saying

The margin for error is thin for the Blue Jackets at the moment, so the last thing the team needs is to make it harder on itself.
Yet that's exactly what happened Saturday night, as turnovers and other self-inflicted wounds doomed the Jackets to a 6-1 loss against Detroit.
"We just hurt ourselves," head coach Brad Larsen said. "Quite simple. The turnovers in the second period were glaring. … We're trying to force plays. We talked about it -- 'Can't do it, can't do it, can't do it.' Kept trying to do it. That's what happens."
Columbus actually got off to a solid start, and Emil Bemstrom's finish of a nice move to the net by Boone Jenner tied the game at 1 in the opening minute of the second period. But from there, Detroit took over by scoring five consecutive goals, including Filip Hronek's tiebreaking goal off a CBJ turnover that allowed him to score from all alone in front of the net.
The floodgates opened from there, with the Jackets unable to muster much in the way of consistent offense the rest of the way and Detroit given too many scoring opportunities.
"They did exactly what they wanted to do in this building tonight, and we fed into that," CBJ defenseman Erik Gudbranson said. "We turned over a lot of pucks tonight, and it just kills your momentum. You do that consistently for two periods, it's going to be really hard to win a hockey game that way."
The good news is Columbus can wash the bad taste out of its mouth pretty quickly with a chance for redemption tonight against the Panthers.
"We gotta learn from it," Jenner said. "We can't play that way, giving the opponent so many chances. It's right back at it tomorrow, and a good test to come back with an effort tomorrow."

Know The Foe: Florida Panthers

Head coach: Paul Maurice (First season)
Season Stats:Goals per game: 3.33 (12th) | Scoring defense: 3.22 (16th) | PP: 18.8 percent (26th) | PK: 77.9 percent (18th)
The narrative:After two straight excellent regular seasons followed by playoff disappointment, the Panthers have gone a different direction behind the bench by bringing in Maurice, who is sixth all-time in victories behind the bench in NHL history. The massive trade that that brought in Matthew Tkachuk but cost the team Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar also gives the Panthers a much different look.
2022-23 leaders:A year after becoming the first NHL team to average four goals per game in nearly three decades, Florida hasn't quite had the same offensive success this year. Tkachuk has been one of the most productive players in the league this year, posting a 7-17-24 line to place ninth in the NHL in scoring, while Carter Verhaeghe is tied for fifth in the league with 11 goals among his 18 points. Brandon Montour leads the defensemen with a 4-14-18 line and captain Aleksander Barkov has four goals and 15 points.
Sergei Bobrovsky is set to get the start against the Blue Jackets, which will be his 11th of the year. He is 4-4-1 with a 3.46 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.
What's new: General manager Bill Zito hasn't been afraid to make moves since taking over, and the acquisition of Tkachuk is one of those trades that will be followed for quite some time. Colin White also was brought in from Ottawa and veteran Marc Staal was added to bolster the blue line, while Mason Marchment and Claude Giroux were among those to leave in free agency after last season.
Trending: The Blue Jackets won the last matchup of the teams on Feb. 24 of last year, ending an eight-game Florida winning streak in the series.
Former CBJ:Bobrovsky, of course, is the winningest goaltender in CBJ history, while Zito took over the Panthers after serving in the Blue Jackets front office. Anthony Duclair remains on the Florida roster but the former Jackets forward is yet to play this year because of an Achilles tendon injury.

3 Keys to the Game

Win the goalie battle: There are plenty of ties between goalies Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov, who likely gets the nod for the Jackets. Both hail from Novokuznetsk, Russia, and it will likely mean a lot for both to match up in net.
No freebies: Florida still has a lot of offensive talent but has struggled on the power play. You can't let the Panthers get going on special teams.
Limit turnovers: Mistakes doomed the Blue Jackets against the Red Wings, and the Jackets have to keep it simple and get back to their game against the Panthers.

3 Stats to Know
  • Twenty different Blue Jackets have scored goals on the season, tied for the most in the NHL with Boston. Fifteen of those players have multiple goals.
  • Jenner has points in five straight home games, posting a 6-2-8 line in that span.
  • Milestone watch: Head coach Brad Larsen is set for his 100th game as head coach. … Erik Gudbranson is two points from 100 for his NHL career (27-72-99, 657 GP). … Boone Jenner is three points from 300 for his NHL career (151-146-297, 606 GP).
Who's Hot

Sean Kuraly has three goals in the last three games. … Johnny Gaudreau has a 1-6-7 line in the last seven games. … Cole Sillinger had a three-game point streak (2-1-3) ended Saturday. … With the CBJ's two overtime winners, Vladislav Gavrikov is just the fourth Blue Jackets defenseman to have multiple overtime goals in a season, joining Seth Jones (2016-17 and 2018-19), Zach Werenski (2019-20) and Jake Bean (2021). … With 11 goals by defensemen, the Jackets are tied for fifth in the NHL.
