What They're Saying

When the Shirelles sang "Mama Said (There'd Be Days Like This)," well, Brad Larsen can relate.
The Blue Jackets head coach is skippering a team beset with injuries and with some young, raw players in the lineup. No day is really the same, and that includes good days and bad days. Unquestionably, Wednesday's 9-4 loss to Buffalo that included the first-ever 6-0 first period deficit in franchise history was a bad day.
"What you don't expect is the amount of injuries to the key guys," said Larsen, who has such names as Zach Werenski, Jakub Voracek, Justin Danforth and Jake Bean likely out for the season. "So what comes with that is a lot of guys playing in situations with inexperience and youth. So what comes with youth and inexperience? Probably inconsistency.
"The swings, we don't want them (to be) that egregious, that big. And sometimes with youth and inexperience comes that stunned look where you get into the Buffalo game there, you look at the nine goals, (the game is) done in 16 minutes."
But the flip side of that is there are good days, too, when the young Jackets have their game. That happened Friday evening, as Columbus got back on the ice, found its battle level and structure and polished off a veteran Calgary team in a 3-1 victory.
"As we go through things like last night, it was a heck of a game," Larsen said. "You just want to put that in a jar, put a lid on it, and then unleash that against LA. I don't have a crystal ball. We gave up five chances (against Calgary) at 5-on-5 in three periods against a really good team. They had some looks on their power play and 6-on-4 and 6-on-5, but 5-on-5, it's five chances in three periods.
"That's a heck of a job by a group of young players, and so now you have to move forward and you try to build off that."

Know The Foe: Los Angeles Kings

Head coach:Todd McLellan (Fourth season)
Season Stats:Goals per game: 3.31 (12th) | Scoring defense: 3.59 (26th) | PP: 25.5 percent (8th) | PK: 71.9 percent (26th)
The narrative: It's a long time since the Kings won two Stanley Cups in three years, hoisting sport's best trophy in both 2012 and '14, with Los Angeles making just three playoff appearances since then and winning zero series. One of those postseason showings came last season, though, as a young core hopes to keep the Kings back in contention for years to come.
2022-23 leaders: Kevin Fiala continues to carve out a niche as one of the best offensive players in the NHL, leading the way with nine goals among his 30 points this season. Seemingly ageless Anze Kopitar is next with a 7-17-24 line, while Viktor Arvidsson has seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points. Gabriel Vilardi, a 23-year-old who was taken in the first round in 2017, leads the team with 13 goals among his 19 points, while 12 players are in double digits in points.
In net, the struggles of Cal Petersen have forced Jonathan Quick to lead the way, as the 37-year-old has suited up in 20 games (19 starts) and posted an 8-8-2 record, 3.42 GAA and .887 save percentage.
What's new: Los Angeles didn't make a ton of changes from a season ago, but defensive and goaltending issues have prevented the team from taking off thus far. Petersen has been sent down, and the team is 2-3-0 in its last five having alternated wins and losses. It's thought a young core headlined by such names as Vilardi, Quinton Byfield, Arthur Kaliyev and Brandt Clarke, among others, will eventually lead the way, but many of the younger players are still to hit their strides.
Trending:Columbus lost both games a season ago, dropping an overtime decision in Nationwide Arena before a loss in the City of Angels. In all, it's been an even series of late, with the Blue Jackets 5-4-3 in the last 12 meetings.

3 Keys to the Game

Keep up the good work: Friday's game was the blueprint for the Jackets to succeed, playing with energy and poise while bringing a strong defensive game.
Get the power play going: After a stretch of success, Columbus has one power-play goal in the last six games and was 0-for-7 on Friday, though some of those power plays were of the short variety. Still, it can be the difference between wins and losses.
Merz-likin' it: With the injury to Joonas Korpisalo, Elvis Merzlikins will get a chance to start some games here. He turned in a good performance in relief Friday and will look to get into a groove.

3 Stats to Know
  • Patrik Laine has five goals in five games since returning from injury, including a pair of two-goal games.
  • Captain Boone Jenner's impressive point-per-game streak has reached 16 contests, with the captain boasting an 8-8-16 line in that time.
  • Milestone watch: Joonas Korpisalo is six games from 200 for his NHL career (80-72-22, 194 GP). … With four assists in the last five games, Jack Roslovic is five helpers from 100 for his NHL career (61-95-156, 332 GP).
Who's Hot

Johnny Gaudreau saw a six-game point streak end Friday but he still has a 3-10-13 line in the last nine games and a 4-15-19 pace in the last 13. … Wednesday's game was the first time the Blue Jackets had multiple players score twice in a game since a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers on Jan. 27 in which both Sean Kuraly and Boone Jenner tallied two. … With six goals and 13 points, Kent Johnson is tied for fourth and eighth, respectively, among NHL rookies. … Twenty-one different Blue Jackets have scored goals on the season, second most in the NHL behind Detroit. Seventeen of those players have multiple goals.
