GameDay-1004

Joonas Korpisalo will start the 2018-19 season opener in goal for the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday (7:30 p.m.; Fox Sports Ohio, Fox Sports app, 97.1 The Fan).
Coach John Tortorella told The Fan on Wednesday that he wanted the Finnish backup to play in one of the back-to-back games this weekend.
Sergei Bobrovsky, the Vezina Trophy winner as the best goalie in the NHL in 2013 and '17, will start the home opener Friday vs. the Carolina Hurricanes in Nationwide Arena (7 p.m., Fox Sports Ohio, Fox Sports app, 97.1 The Fan).
"Korpi deserves an opportunity," Tortorella said Tuesday. "He had a pretty good camp."
The Blue Jackets will still be without two-time NHL All-Star defenseman Seth Jones while he recovers from a right knee injury sustained Sept. 25 that could keep him out another month, but there was good news on another blue liner.
Tortorella said Ryan Murray is expected to play against the Red Wings after missing much of the preseason camp with a groin injury. With Jones out, offseason signee Adam Clendening may be in the lineup.
The Blue Jackets are itching to get the season started, even if it means playing on consecutive nights.

Torts on Jackets' first game of the 2018-19 season

"There's no point in being tired because it's the first games of the season so you're still in your best shape," center Alex Wennberg said. "You've got to make the best of it."
Left wing Anthony Duclair and center Riley Nash will make their Blue Jackets' debuts in Detroit. They will be on the fourth line with Sonny Milano, who had 22 points (14 goals, eight assists) in 55 games as a rookie last season.
Nash, 29, signed a three-year contract as an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after having career bests for goals, assists and points (15-26-41) for the Boston Bruins last season. He has 139 points (53 goals, 86 assists) in 399 NHL games with Boston and Carolina.
Duclair, 23, is with his fourth NHL team after stops with the New York Rangers and, last season for the Arizona Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks, he had 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 56 games.
Their talent bodes well for the Blue Jackets being deep and relentless at the forward positions as is needed in the modern NHL.
"I don't consider it a fourth line," Tortorella said.
Of course, the offense is driven by the top line of Artemi Panarin (27-55-82 points), second-year center Pierre-Luc Dubois (20-28-48) and right wing Cam Atkinson (24-22-46).
"I like our team, I really do," Tortorella said. "I'm not crazy with Jonesy being out and all that. I think he's a huge part of our engine as far as the pace we play with, but I like our club."
Atkinson is happy how the schedule plays out this weekend.
"I like the fact we get on the road before the home opener," he said. "I like playing in back-to-back games. Your adrenalin is still there. It's kind of relaxed. The building is going to be buzzing here, it's going to be buzzing in Detroit."
