The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired the rights to left wing Gregory Hofmann from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a seventh round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. Hofmann will remain with EV Zug in Switzerland's National League A for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.
Hofmann, 28, has recorded 163 goals and 156 assists for 319 points with 255 penalty minutes and a cumulative +51 plus/minus rating in 481 career games over 12 seasons with EV Zug, HC Lugano, HC Davos and HC Ambri-Piotta in the National League A. He has posted eight campaigns of double-digit goals, including three-straight 20-goal seasons from 2017-20, and notched five seasons of 30 or more points.
A native of Biel-Bienne, Switzerland, Hofmann has recorded 16-20-36 with 20 penalty minutes and a +12 plus/minus ratings while serving as an alternate captain for EV Zug in 2020-21. He currently ranks fourth-T in the league in goals and points, ninth-T in plus/minus and 10th-T in assists this season.
The 6-0, 201-pound forward was selected to the NL Media All-Star Team in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He recorded 24-23-47 in 50 games with Zug in 2019-20. He led the NLA in goals and set career highs in goals and points with 30-21-51 in 50 appearances with HC Lugano in 2018-19.
Hofmann was selected by the Hurricanes in the fourth round, 103rd overall, at the 2011 NHL Draft. He has represented Switzerland at numerous international tournaments, including the 2018 Winter Olympics. He also skated for the country at the 2016, 2018 (silver) and 2019 IIHF World Championships as well as the 2011 and 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships.
