The 6-0, 184-pound native of Cambridge, Ontario spent the previous three years with the Ontario Hockey League's Barrie Colts, posting a 20-27-8 mark, 3.71 GAA, .899 SV% and three shutouts in 60 games between 2018-20. He did not play in 2020-21 as the OHL season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Johnson, 19, collected three assists and two penalty minutes in nine games with the Blue Jackets last season after concluding his sophomore year at the University of Michigan. The club's first pick, fifth overall, at the 2021 NHL Draft registered 17-47-64 and 10 penalty minutes in 58 games over the past two seasons at Michigan. Last season, the 6-0, 175-pound native of Port Moody, British Columbia also played for Canada at the Olympic Games, IIHF World Championships and IIHF World Junior Championships, scoring the overtime golden goal in the latter.
