Pyyhtia Team Update

The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned left wing Mikael Pyyhtia from TPS in Finland's top professional league (Liiga) to the Cleveland Monsters, the club's American Hockey League affiliate, General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

Pyyhtia (pronounced PEW-tee-uh) has registered 31 goals and 32 assists for 63 points with 26 penalty minutes, eight power play goals, 412 shots and a cumulative +1 plus/minus rating in 140 career games with TPS in Liiga from 2019-23. He has added 9-11-20 and 12 penalty minutes in 34 career Liiga playoff games, helping the team reach the league finals in 2021 and 2022. He led the league in goals and ranked fourth in points in the 2022 postseason with 8-5-13 in 18 games.
A native of Turku, Finland, the 21-year-old recorded 7-13-20, 16 PIM and 187 shots in 47 regular season appearances with TPS in 2022-23. He ranked fifth-T in the Liiga in goals, ninth-T in power play goals and 11th-T in game-winning goals in 2021-22, finishing with 21-14-35, six PIM and seven PPG and four GWG in 56 outings with TPS. He also led players 20-years-old or younger in goals and ranked second in points and game-winning goals (tied) and third-T in power play goals.
The 6-0, 166-pound forward was selected by the Blue Jackets in the fourth round, 114th overall, at the 2020 NHL Draft and signed a three-year entry level contract with the club on May 5, 2022. He racked up 27-49-76 with 37 PIM and a cumulative +29 plus/minus rating in 88 career games with TPS' junior team from 2018-21. Pyyhtia helped Finland win a bronze medal at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championships, finishing with 1-1-2 in seven games.
