The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that Trent Vogelhuber has been named head coach of the Cleveland Monsters, the club's American Hockey League affiliate. Vogelhuber, who spent the past four seasons as a Cleveland assistant coach, succeeds Mike Eaves and will be the seventh head coach in Monsters history.

"We are thrilled to name Trent Vogelhuber as the next head coach of the Cleveland Monsters," said Blue Jackets Director of Player Personnel Chris Clark, who oversees hockey operations for the Monsters as the franchise's general manager. "Trent has done a terrific job as an assistant coach over the past four years, including leading the bench at times during this past season, and has earned this opportunity. He is extremely bright, hard-working and passionate about the game and we believe he will succeed in both developing our young players and putting a winning team on the ice for the passionate fans in Cleveland."
Vogelhuber, 33, began his coaching career following a six-year playing career that was cut short by injuries following the 2017-18 season. He served as an assistant coach under Cleveland Head Coach John Madden during the 2018-19 campaign before spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach to Eaves.
The Dublin, Ohio native was the first player from the Columbus-area selected by the Blue Jackets in the NHL Draft, when he was tabbed by the club in the seventh round, 211th overall, at the 2007 draft held at Nationwide Arena. During his six-year career, he registered 28 goals and 45 assists for 73 points with 191 penalty minutes in 267 career AHL games with the Springfield Falcons, Lake Erie Monsters and San Antonio Rampage. He spent four of those seasons in the Blue Jackets organization from 2012-16, and helped the Monsters capture the 2016 Calder Cup championship. That season, he tallied a career-high 11-16-27 and 65 penalty minutes in 70 games and added 2-5-7 in 13 playoff outings. He played the final two seasons of his career with the San Antonio Rampage, the AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.
Prior to turning professional, Vogelhuber played four seasons at Miami University from 2008-12. He tallied 21-30-51 and 123 penalty minutes in 149 career games with the RedHawks. He helped Miami capture a CCHA regular season championship in 2009-10 and earn trips to four consecutive NCAA tournaments.
