COLUMBUS, OHIO ---The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Ian Cole from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for center Nick Moutrey and a third round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. He was previously acquired by the Senators on Saturday in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Cole, 29, has registered 18 goals and 72 assists for 90 points with 332 penalty minutes and a +64 plus/minus rating in 385 career NHL games with the Penguins and St. Louis Blues. He has added 1-13-14 in 56 career Stanley Cup Playoff contests and helped the Penguins win back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017.

The Ann Arbor, Michigan native has posted 3-10-13 with 52 penalty minutes and a +3 plus/minus rating in 47 games with the Penguins this season. In 2016-17, he set career highs with 5-21-26, 72 penalty minutes and a +26 plus/minus rating in 81 games with Pittsburgh before collecting 0-9-9 in 25 playoff contests to help the club win its second-straight Stanley Cup. The 6-1, 219-pound defenseman registered 0-12-12 and 59 penalty minutes in 70 games with Pittsburgh in 2015-16 prior to adding 1-2-3 and 14 penalty minutes in 24 Stanley Cup contests.
"Ian Cole is a hard-working, competitive defenseman who we know very well having drafted him in St. Louis," said Kekalainen. "He is a very good defender and a two-time Stanley Cup champion who can bring a lot of intangibles to our group."
Cole was St. Louis' first round selection, 18th overall, in the 2007 NHL Draft. The blueliner registered 17-48-65 and 153 penalty minutes in 111 games at the University of Notre Dame from 2007-10 and was named a NCAA (West) First Team All-American in 2008-09 after notching 6-20-26, 58 penalty minutes and +15 in 38 games. He has represented the United States at various international tournaments, including the 2008 and 2009 IIHF World Junior Championships.
Moutrey, 22, has posted 17-17-34 and 99 penalty minutes in 136 career American Hockey League games with the Lake Erie/Cleveland Monsters from 2015-18, including 3-3-6 and 18 penalty minutes in 22 games this season. Columbus' fourth round pick, 105th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Toronto, Ontario native tallied 58-98-156 and 226 penalty minutes in 261 career Ontario Hockey League games with the Saginaw Spirit and North Bay Battalion.
