COLUMBUS, OHIO - Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno is a finalist for the Mark Messier Leadership Award, the club and League announced tonight. The award is presented "to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season" as selected by six-time Stanley Cup champion and Hall of Famer Mark Messier. The other finalists are Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks and Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames.
On the ice, Foligno helped Columbus to a 50-24-8 record and 108 points - a 32-point improvement from 2015-16 - by collecting 26-25-51 and adding five game-winning goals in 79 outings. In his second season as captain, he recorded 25 goals and 50 points for the second time in his career (2014-15) as the Jackets compiled the fourth-best record in the NHL a season after finishing 27th overall. He also picked up 5-9-14 and two game-winners during the club's 16-game winning streak, the second-longest in NHL history, from Nov. 29, 2016 to Jan. 3, 2017.
