Lila's story

What They're Saying

Friday night in Winnipeg, the Blue Jackets got on the board first, built a multigoal lead, played from ahead and finished off a 4-1 victory over the Jets.
Sunday night at home against Detroit, the Blue Jackets let Detroit score first and build a multigoal lead, and playing from behind, Columbus never quite could catch the Red Wings in a 4-2 loss.
There are more comeback wins than ever before in the NHL, but just four teams so far this season have a winning record when giving up the first goal. It underscores the value of not making it too hard on yourself to win games, and the Blue Jackets said they simply made it too difficult on themselves to get the victory two nights ago in Detroit.
"I think it was just execution and some systems stuff, but plays with the puck, we just hurt ourselves there," captain Boone Jenner said. "They were able to build momentum on it. By the time we found our game, we were in a hole, and it's always tough to play out of that. I think it's just earlier starts, get to our game right away. It wasn't there for the first little bit, and we have them chances, let them get into the game, and it ended up hurting us."
The Blue Jackets don't have time to reflect too much on that performance, but the reality is they hope to be better as they go into another difficult atmosphere in which to play tonight against Pittsburgh.
"We need to learn and move on," defenseman Marcus Bjork said.

Know The Foe: Pittsburgh Penguins

Head coach:Mike Sullivan (Eighth season)
Season Stats:Goals per game: 3.52 (6th) | Scoring defense: 3.12 (17th) | PP: 18.3 percent (26th) | PK: 80.5 percent (9th)
The narrative:The Penguins kept Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang together in the offseason with an eye on making a few more runs with its three-time Cup-winning core, and after a bit of an up-and-down start, Sullivan's team has found the gas pedal in recent weeks. All the familiar names are still there for a veteran team that has a championship pedigree but hasn't won a playoff series since 2017-18.
2022-23 leaders:Who else but Sidney Crosby, as the seemingly ageless superstar is off to another great start with 13 goals and 33 points in 25 games to this point. Jake Guentzel is continuing to fill the net with 12 goals among his 24 points, while Malkin has posted an 8-16-24 line. Richard Rakell's first full season in Pittsburgh is going well, as the veteran forward has scored 10 goals.
In net, Tristan Jarry has started 16 games and is 10-3-3 with a 2.86 GAA and .915 save percentage.
What's new:Pittsburgh is without Letang after he suffered a stroke last week, and we send well wishes to one of the top defensemen in the NHL over the past decade. Pittsburgh got off to a bit of a rough start that included a seven-game losing streak, but the team is 9-2-2 since and outscoring teams by an average of 3.62-2.62 in that span.
Trending:Columbus has six straight regular-season games to Pittsburgh, including a 6-3 Pens win Oct. 22 in Nationwide Arena. Columbus is 4-15-4 all-time in the Steel City as well and has not won in the arena since Nov. 13, 2015.
Former CBJ: Jeff Carter has posted a 3-10-13 line in 22 games on the year.

3 Keys to the Game

Get in front: Considering this has been a house of horrors for the Blue Jackets, figuring out a way to get an early lead can only help with confidence.
Top line tone setters: The last road game, Friday's win at Winnipeg, featured big performances from the line of Jenner, Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine. The trio was eventually broken up in the last game, but it has the talent to match Pittsburgh's big guns in this one.
Shake up Jake: This corner is admittedly a fan of the Jake's Shake milkshake in Pittsburgh, but the Pens star has 10 goals in 18 career games vs. Columbus. He always seems to be a thorn in the side of the Jackets.

3 Stats to Know
  • Gaudreau has four multipoint games in the last six contests, plus a 2-9-11 line in that span. In addition, the wing has notched a 3-14-17 line in the last 11 games.
  • Marchenko and Berni are set to become the 33rd and 34th players overall and 30th and 31st skaters to play for the Blue Jackets this year in just the team's 24th game. For comparison, last year 36 players and 32 skaters wore union blue in an 82-game season.
  • Milestone watch: Sean Kuraly is set to play in his 99th career game with the Blue Jackets.
Who's Hot

After picking up two assists Sunday vs. Detroit, Jenner has 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in the last 13 games. … He became the fifth CBJ player to reach 300 career points with the team on Friday, joining Rick Nash, Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno and David Vyborny. ... Gustav Nyquist has 11 goals in 23 career games against Pittsburgh. … With six goals and 13 points, Kent Johnson is tied for fourth and seventh, respectively, among NHL rookies. … Twenty-one different Blue Jackets have scored goals on the season, second most in the NHL behind Detroit. Seventeen of those players have multiple goals. ... With the CBJ's two overtime winners, Vladislav Gavrikov is just the fourth Blue Jackets defenseman to have multiple overtime goals in a season. … Blue Jackets rookies have combined for 10-15-25 in 23 games, placing the team tied for third in the NHL in goals and fifth in points for rookies.

This Day in CBJ History

Dec. 6, 2010: Rick Nash scores at 19:13 of the third to tie the game and Kyle Wilson gets the winning goal in a shootout to give the Jackets a 3-2 win over Dallas in Nationwide Arena.
