Chris Quinn, president and CEO of iDesign, grew up in Edina, Minn., and if people know anything about the suburban Twin Cities community, it's that if you want to win a state championship in hockey, odds are you have to go through the Hornets to get there.
Schools from Edina have won 13 boys state titles and four of the last five girls state titles, so it's probably not much of a surprise Quinn fell in love with the sport at a young age. He wasn't much of a player, but he's taken lessons from his time around the sport into the business world.
Perhaps that's one reason why the partnership between iDesign and the Blue Jackets has flourished so well, including today's announcement that the housewares design company would become
the helmet sponsor for CBJ road games
for the 2021-22 season, starting tonight in Detroit.

"I am a ridiculously big hockey fan, and we do try to emulate some of the way we run our company the way I believe hockey and professional NHLers tend to show up and participate in their sport," Quinn said. "If you look at NHL teams, rarely do you ever hear them talk about just themselves. They are always talking about the strength of their team.
"It's the same situation with us. It's not about me as a leader. I'm only as good as the team. It is about the team winning. Everybody's name on the Stanley Cup is a differentiator in professional sports. This isn't an individual sport. I love golf, but we're not trying to model how we run the company after winning a single-leader trophy. This is about everybody's name."

iDesign named away helmet sponsor

More than that, Quinn sees other similarities between the Blue Jackets and iDesign, which has been named the official home organization partner of the team. Both are companies that strive to perform at the highest level while making a positive impact on the community, with similar core values and a focus on the customer.
Founded in 1974, iDesign's mission is to make everyday living easier with innovative products designed to help people organize and enhance their home with style. The Solon, Ohio-based company has partnered with the Blue Jackets since 2017 on a variety of promotions, and Quinn has been impressed by how the team and company see eye-to-eye on so many levels.
"It's a perfect overlap for us in terms of the demographic, ethnographic and psychographic of the Columbus Blue Jackets and their fans," Quinn said. "The consumers that are our ideal target are folks that already love and embrace iDesign. This confluence of your fan base and our fan base meshes those two demographics perfectly.
"We love hockey because from a female fan perspective, it's the most dominant professional sports league in terms of female fan followers. They are our core demographic and we just have a lot of trust and respect for the Blue Jackets organization. We've now been working with them for a couple of years and have eased in to something as big as becoming the helmet sponsor for away games, so this was kind of a graduation ceremony for our relationship."
Quinn also has respect for the way the Blue Jackets approach relationships with their partners, with the organization always willing to go out on a limb to see their visions become reality.
"There is an over-the-top commitment to make sure they are meeting their partners' needs, and I think this idea is they act very entrepreneurially," Quinn said. "And we are a nearly 48-year-old company is entrepreneurially led and run organization, which means we love to do business with entrepreneurs. When we come to the team and come up with great ideas - some not great ideas - and new ideas, we really don't get them rejected immediately.
"Having done business in pro sports before with very large consumer product companies, I know that dealing in professional sports isn't something that always feels entrepreneurial, but I believe the Blue Jackets feel entrepreneurial."
Add it all up and both sides view the agreement as a great way to deepen what already has been a fruitful partnership.
"We are excited to activate iDesign's brand on the NHL's national stage as part of the Blue Jackets' away helmet," Blue Jackets chief operating officer Cameron Scholvin said. "iDesign has been a Corporate Partner of the Blue Jackets for several years and we are proud to elevate them as the team's Official Home Organization Partner."
Off the ice, both companies strive to be pillars of the community as well, boasting similar values. From the Blue Jackets' commitment to growing hockey in Columbus as well as its work on pediatric cancer causes, educational causes and honoring military veterans to iDesign's focus on empowering its workers and creating sustainable products, the two companies are about more than just hockey or housewares.
When asked what Quinn would most want people to know about iDesign's products, that's what the president and CEO pointed to.
"First and foremost, our commitment to inclusion, empathy and diversity," Quinn said. "We want them to know about our core values first, and then those feed into what we believe is the existential reason for our company, which is it improves peoples' loves. We call it 'live simply.'
"We believe there is too much chaos and clutter in the world, and we have products and solutions we think can help consumers declutter and get organized. Through that, I think it brings a sense of peace and calm in a turbulent environment that we are all living in."
