Teams with differing overtime results in their season openers face off when the Carolina Hurricanes play in the Blue Jackets' home opener at Nationwide Arena on Friday (7 p.m., Fox Sports Ohio, Fox Sports app, 97.1 The Fan).
While the Hurricanes on Thursday were losing 2-1 at home to the New York Islanders to spoil the NHL coaching debut of Carolina's Rod Brind'Amour, the Blue Jackets secured a 3-2 win at the Detroit Red Wings on Artemi Panarin's goal at 2:11 of OT.

"We're ready to play in front of our fans," Blue Jackets left winger Josh Anderson said after the game. "The year's here so let's get back home and do the same thing tomorrow night."
Anderson and Cam Atkinson each scored, Panarin had two points, Anthony Duclair had an assist in his Blue Jackets' debut and Joonas Korpisalo made 18 saves, including three in overtime.
Sergei Bobrovsky will start vs. the Hurricanes as the coaching staff opted to save him for the home opener and not play him back-to-back.

Carolina may also make a switch from goaltender Petr Mrazek, which would allow Curtis McElhinney to play against his former team (85 games from 2013 to 2017). The Hurricanes claimed McElhinney on waivers Monday from the Toronto Maple Leafs after Scott Darling sustained a lower body injury that will keep him out indefinitely.

There could be more tinkering for the Blue Jackets despite outshooting Detroit 39-20, with a 16-3 margin in the third period.
Coach John Tortorella during the second period swapped left wings Nick Foligno and Sonny Milano. Milano went from the fourth to second line to play with center Alex Wennberg and right wing Oliver Bjorkstrand.
The move put Foligno with center Riley Nash, in his first game for Columbus, and Duclair on the right side.

"Other than a shift or two from those two (original) lines I didn't like what they were producing," Tortorella said. "With some of the people we have now I can move some pieces around and try to spark something. What we go with tomorrow night I don't know."
He said Boone Jenner, Brandon Dubinsky and Anderson was the most consistent line while Atkinson, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Panarin were "OK."
The Blue Jackets will look to improve on their power play. After Atkinson's goal on their first attempt for a 1-0 lead in the first period, they went 0 for 5.
Atkinson, though, sees the positives with 12 shots generated during the 9:10 of man advantage for the game.
"We found a way to get one," he said. "I felt for the most part every time we stepped on the ice we were a threat, which is important because if you don't score you want to gain the momentum and have the momentum when the power play's done."
