"It's always an honor to represent your country on the world stage," Armstrong told stlouisblues.com. "I'm grateful to Hockey Canada for giving me this opportunity and I'm looking forward to working with the players and coaches to bring home a gold medal."
Armstrong will lead a staff that also includes Detroit's Steve Yzerman as associate general manager and Arizona's Shane Doan as assistant general manager. Tim Taylor, who serves as the Blues' Director of Player Personnel, will also assist in selecting players for the team.
"We are excited to unveil the experienced management group and selection committee that will lead Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Championship," said Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Scott Salmond. "Doug, Steve and Shane have been successful in the NHL and at the Olympics, world championships and world cups… We are fortunate to have six individuals with extensive pedigrees who are dedicated to helping us build towards our goal of winning a gold medal in Tampere and Riga."
Armstrong won two Olympic gold medals with Canada in 2010 and 2014, as well as one at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Armstrong also was set to be the general manager for Canada at the 2022 Olympics if NHL players had participated.
Now in his 13th season as the general manager of the St. Louis Blues, Armstrong has led his team to a 552-326-105 regular-season record. The 552 wins rank fifth overall in the NHL, and the club has reached the postseason in 10 of his 12 seasons - including in 2019 when the team won its first Stanley Cup championship.
Prior to joining the Blues, Armstrong spent 16 years with the Dallas Stars, winning a Stanley Cup as assistant general manager in 1999.
