Blues announce initiatives to celebrate Black History Month
BySt. Louis Blues / Press Release
Black History Month is here, and the St. Louis Blues are celebrating the occasion with a variety of initiatives throughout the month of February. Here are just some of the ways the Blues will celebrate this year:
Participants that have completed the learn-to-skate portion of the North City Blues program will be invited to Enterprise Center on Feb. 9 to begin practices to learn to play hockey. North City Blues is a free after-school program that provides children with the opportunity to try the game for the first time. - The NHL's Black Hockey History Mobile Museum, presented by American Legacy, is touring the country and will make a stop to visit students at Cardinal Ritter College Prep on Feb. 15. The museum celebrates black achievement in hockey and showcases today's stars while looking back at the pioneers who helped shape the League. Students at Cardinal Ritter will tour the museum, enjoy a roundtable with Blues staff, and be introduced to the team's ball hockey program. - Blues front office staff will take a field trip to the Griot Museum of Black History on Feb. 24. The museum, located in St. Louis, is dedicated to revealing the broad scope of Black history and culture and features life-size wax figures, art, memorabilia and more. - Front office staff for the Blues, Enterpise Center and Stifel Theatre will be invited to a lunch from Steve's Hot Dogs and Levy Restaurants while watching a screening of "Willie," a documentary released last year to celebrate Willie O'Ree, the first Black player to play in the NHL. In addition, the team will highlight NHL-driven diversity initiatives at home games throughout the month, with additional stories being shared through the Blues and the team's Youth Hockey social media accounts. Black History Month is celebrated as part of Hockey is for Everyone - a year-round initiative by the NHL and the NHL Players' Association that celebrates diversity and inclusion in hockey.
