The NHL season has been on pause since mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the League presented a 21-page document Monday that detailed "Phase 2" of a plan to get back on the ice.
Here's what you need to know about the announcement:

  1. Since the NHL season was paused on March 12, players were advised to self-quarantine, where they have remained ever since. Phase 2 is the next step and is expected to begin in early June. It will be voluntary for the players - they aren't required to participate - but Phase 2 gives them an opportunity to get back to the team's training facilities to resume workouts, with significant restrictions.
    2. Players participating in Phase 2 will be able to resume on-ice and off-ice workouts, but in groups of six or less. All skating sessions would be players only - no coaches are allowed on the ice, either - and would be non-contact. All off-ice workouts would be limited to six players in the gym and proper social distancing measures would be required
    3. Players and club personnel will undergo testing for active COVID-19 infection at least 48 hours prior to returning for Phase 2. Only those testing negative for the virus would be allowed to return to the training facilities. Players would also be tested on an ongoing basis and would be subjected to temperature checks daily.
