MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced on Thursday that the team has agreed to terms with Martin Lapointe on a three-year contract extension (2021-22 to 2023-24), along with the addition of new duties as the club's director of amateur scouting.

Lapointe will also maintain his director of player personnel duties for the duration of the new contract, which begins on July 1.
Hired as the Canadiens' director of player development in 2012, Lapointe enjoyed a 16-year NHL career during which he was a member of four teams before becoming a professional scout for the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009. Over the course of his playing career with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and the Blackhawks, Lapointe amassed 181 goals and 381 points in 991 games. He won the Stanley Cup with Detroit, who drafted him 10th overall in 1991. He was promoted to director of player personnel in the summer of 2017.
Now 47 years old, he is one of the rare players to have represented Canada in three World Junior Hockey Championships, winning gold in 1991 in Saskatoon and again in 1993 in Gävle, Sweden.
