Press Release (BI)

Update November 8, 2022, 1:45 p.m. ET: In November 2022, the DropShop team notified partner clubs of their decision to discontinue offering services to external clients. This means that the Canadiens DropShop site and Marketplace will be closing on December 8. For more information, visit our Discord channel.
MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens announced Tuesday they will be launching their first-ever non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the form of digital art collectibles that celebrate the team's run to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. The first packs will be released on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET and will then continue to be "dropped" on future Thursdays, Saturdays, and Tuesdays throughout September.

The digital art packs will fall into two categories, "Base" and "Rare," and will be priced at $25 and $50 CDN, respectively. Unlike other NFTs, payment can be made using a standard credit card; no cryptocurrency is required. Each pack will contain four unique NFTs - three featuring team artwork, photography and commemorative game tickets from the club's 2021 postseason, and then a digital game puck with box score data from one of the team's 22 contests in the playoffs. Starting in September, collectors will be able to buy, sell and trade their NFTs in a "Marketplace" built on the same customized blockchain.
"On the heels of an unforgettable season, we're thrilled to provide fans with a unique way to own a digital piece of history in a format that recalls traditional card collecting familiar to generations," said France Margaret Bélanger, President, Sports and Entertainment, Groupe CH. "In taking this pack model approach, we're hoping to make NFT ownership viable to as wide an audience as possible, and allow collectors of all ages and means the chance to participate in this initiative."
Total packs issued by the team in this pilot phase will be extremely limited, with no more than several hundred packs of digital art released at any single drop. A dedicated Web platform,
canadiens.dropshop.io
, will detail the exact numbers of pieces available and serve as the exclusive home to the club's NFTs. The site features exhaustive information about the project including the steps involved in registering for and purchasing packs, and also showcases all artwork featured on the various NFTs themselves.
