In goal, Jake Allen made 49 saves in his fifth consecutive start while on the blue line William Lagesson made his Canadiens debut. Forwards Michael Pezzetta and Tyler Pitlick left the game with upper-body injuries and did not return, prompting the team to call up Jesse Ylonen from the Laval Rocket on an emergency basis.
Pezzetta and Pitlick did not travel with the team to New Jersey postgame, joining Jonathan Drouin, Brendan Gallagher, Ryan Poehling, Jeff Petry, and Kale Clague as the players unavailable due to injury.
With no morning skate scheduled at the Prudential Center, any changes to the lineup on Sunday will only be known closer to game time. The game will mark Joel Edmundson's 400th in the NHL.
At the other end of the ice, the Devils are also playing a second game in as many days over the weekend.
On Saturday, New Jersey fell 4-3 to the Capitals in Washington despite entering the third period with a 2-1 lead. Jack Hughes, Damon Severson, and Jesper Bratt were the Devils goalscorers in the loss - the team's fifth in its last six games. Nico Daws allowed four goals on 22 shots.
New Jersey currently sits last in the Metropolitan Division with a 23-37-5 record.
Up front, Bratt and Hughes lead the Devils in scoring with 64 and 52 points, respectively. The former is currently riding a six-game point streak, registering 9 points over that span. Hughes for his part has five points in his last three games.
The Devils count three former Habs on the roster in Tomas Tatar, P.K. Subban, and Andrew Hammond. Hammond was traded to New Jersey on March 21, and is currently on the IR.
Sunday's game is the second of three meetings between the two teams this season. New Jersey took the first matchup 7-1 on Feb. 8.
