MONTREAL -- General manager Kent Hughes provided several medical updates during his press conference at the Bell Centre ahead of the season opener.

Hughes confirmed that defenseman Mike Matheson underwent an MRI on Wednesday to determine the extent of his lower-body injury. Results are expected in the next 48 hours.
Hughes also indicated that defenseman Joel Edmundson is "progressing super well" in his bid to return from a lower-back injury.
Edmundson has been skating with team medical staff for approximately one week.
"We don't have an exact date for his return," indicated Hughes. "We're encouraged and we'll take things day-by-day with Eddy."

Unfortunately, the news isn't positive with respect to forward Paul Byron, who was recently placed on LTI as he continues to battle a hip injury.
"In the short-term, and probably even in the mid-term, it doesn't look like Paul will be able to return, absent an extreme change from a medical standpoint. He's still having trouble," explained Hughes. "It's a bit like Carey [Price] last year. We'd see Carey make progress, but he'd reach a certain point in his rehab where things would take steps back all the time. That's what we're seeing with Paul right now. I know he's going to see another specialist in the coming weeks."
Hughes didn't have any medical news to share regarding Price's status.
He mentioned, however, that the veteran goaltender should address the media next week.
