BUFFALO -- The Canadiens prospects fell 4-3 against the Sabres in game 1 of the Prospects Challenge at the LECOM Harborcenter on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, the Canadiens named Justin Barron as captain with Jan Mysak and Lucas Condotta as alternate captains.

Habs fans in the stands made sure to show off their bleu-blanc-rouge swag with pride.

Joe Vrbetic got the nod between the pipes for the Canadiens. The Sabres dressed two goalies with Beck Warm starting the first half of the tilt and Tomas Suchanek taking over in the second half.
Emil Heineman opened scoring near the halfway mark of the first period, assisted by Jordan Harris.

Soon after, Filip Mesar doubled Montreal's lead off a beautiful pass from fellow Slovak Juraj Slafkovsky.

The Sabres scored two off the sticks of Josh Passolt and Nolan Burke to tie the game.
Buffalo got off to a strong start in the second, grabbing the lead with a goal from Tyson Kozak.

Kozak notched his second of the night in the third frame, doubling their lead to 4-2.
The Habs' pressure in the Sabres zone paid off when Owen Beck sent a wrister past Suchanek to make it 4-3, but the team fell short of a comeback.
