WINNIPEG - Despite mounting a valiant comeback from a four-goal deficit, the Canadiens saw their winning streak halted at five games as they lost 8-4 to the Jets in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Sam Montembeault returned to the crease for his 26th game of the season.
For his part, Mathieu Perreault was playing his first game back in Winnipeg since signing with the Canadiens as a free agent in the summer.

Prior to the game, the Jets welcomed the Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus of Winnipeg to sing both the Ukrainian and Canadian national anthems.

In a penalty-filled first, the Jets got out to a 4-0 lead before the period had reached its halfway mark. Evgeny Svechnikov, Nate Schmidt, Adam Lowry, and Mark Scheifele all beat Montembeault before the period was 10 minutes old.
But Martin St-Louis' troops didn't let that stop them. First, Josh Anderson broke Connor Hellebuyck's shutout when he sniped it from near the corner to the Winnipeg netminder's left at 11:18.
Jeff Petry earned a helper on the goal.

Nearly six minutes later, Anderson added a second goal - remarkably, the only power play goal of the period - when he jumped on the rebound from Cole Caufield's shot from the high slot and into a gaping Jets net to reduce Winnipeg's lead down to two goals.
Caufield and Nick Suzuki got assists on the tally.

Then, Artturi Lehkonen made it a 4-3 game when he broke free in the neutral zone and beat Hellebuyck with a wrister from in close for his 10th of the season.
Jake Evans picked up an assist on the play.

After 20 minutes, the Habs were still down a goal but outshot their hosts 14-6 in the opening frame.
The Canadiens tied the game just past the four-minute mark of the second on a three-on-one with Ryan Poehling, Mathieu Perreault, and Anderson, with Poehling feeding Anderson who buried it from near the hashmarks to earn his first career hat trick.
Poehling got the lone assist on the marker.

Later in the period, with Jeff Petry in the box, Rem Pitlick broke away and was awarded a penalty shot after Pierre-Luc Dubois slashed him, but Pitlick couldn't capitalize.
The Jets retook the lead moments later, when Andrew Copp scored his 13th of the season.
After 40 minutes, Montreal trailed 5-4 and was outshot 11-10 by Winnipeg in the second.
In the third, with Brendan Gallagher in the box, Scheifele gave the Jets a two-goal cushion with his second of the night at the 2:46 mark.
Dubois made it a 7-4 game with another power play goal just over three minutes later.
Andrew Hammond replaced Sam Montembeault in goal following the Dubois tally.
Paul Stastny added an eighth goal with 2:34 remaining in the game.
The Canadiens' next game takes place Thursday night against the Flames in Calgary.
