Goaltender Sam Montembeault was the starter for the Habs, while Anton Forsberg was his counterpart in net for the Sens.
Despite a first period that featured speed and intensity, neither team could find the back of the net. The Senators led 10 to 8 in shots on goal.
The home side ended the stalemate 22 seconds into the second period with a goal from Alex DeBrincat.
The Canadiens then found themselves in the box for back-to-back penalties, and the Senators' Claude Giroux made sure to double Ottawa's lead on the second man-advantage with Kirby Dach serving a minor for tripping.
Giroux scored again near the halfway mark of the frame.
The Canadiens returned to the locker room down 3-0 after 40 minutes. Shots were 25 to 25.
The Habs tried to inch their way back into the game in the third frame but couldn't solve Forsberg. Mathieu Joseph and Derick Brassard brought the Senators' final tally to 5-0.
Martin St-Louis' squad will have a chance to redeem themselves against the Sens on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Bell Centre. For tickets,
