It was a special night for Habs newcomer Jon Merrill. He played his 400th career NHL game.
The 29-year-old defenseman, who was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings on April 11, suited up for his eighth game with Montreal.
He also played for New Jersey and Vegas as well.

The Maple Leafs struck early in the first period.
Just 4:07 after the opening faceoff, defenseman Morgan Rielly's wrist shot from the point found its way through traffic and beat goaltender Jake Allen for his fifth goal of the season.

The tally, which was unassisted, gave Toronto a 1-0 lead.
That's the way things stood after 20 minutes.
Allen made 10 saves in the frame, including this one on centreman Alexander Kerfoot.

The Canadiens took full advantage of a power play opportunity early in the second period to tie things up 1-1.
Right-winger Tyler Toffoli scored his team-leading 28th goal of the season at the 1:55 mark of the stanza, converting a perfect cross-ice feed from Nick Suzuki.

It was Toffoli's seventh goal in the last eight games, while Suzuki extended his point streak to six games on the play.
Defenseman Jeff Petry also collected a helper on the sequence, extending his point streak to five games.
With Toffoli's snipe, the Canadiens have scored on the power play in each of their last three contests.
The always dangerous Auston Matthews gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead with 2:39 remaining in the period, tipping a point shot from defenseman Jake Muzzin past Allen.

It was Matthews' League-leading 39th goal of the campaign.
Veteran Joe Thornton also collected a helper on the play.
Toronto headed to the dressing room in front by one.
Sheldon Keefe's squad held a 21-14 advantage in shots as well.

Centreman Phillip Danault scored the game-tying goal with 51.8 seconds remaining in the third period for the Canadiens, beating Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell in close.

Allen was on the bench for an extra attacker when Danault netted his fifth goal of the season.
Suzuki and Petry assisted on the tally, which sent the game to overtime.
And, for a second straight game, rookie Cole Caufield put Montreal over the top in the extra frame, scoring with 17 seconds left.

It was his second goal of the season.
Petry and Suzuki assisted on Caufield's game-winner.
Allen finished the game with 27 saves on 29 shots.
The Canadiens will be back in action on Wednesday night when they begin a three-game road trip with a matchup against the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre.
