The Maple Leafs struck first at 11:41 of the opening frame. Michael Bunting scored on one knee from the low slot after receiving a pass from Mitch Marner stationed behind Jake Allen's net.
Toronto was up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Their lead didn't last long in the second period. Coming down the right wing with Nick Suzuki on the opposite side, Caufield ripped one top shelf 33 seconds into the middle stanza. Suzuki and David Savard earned assists on the play.
