MONTREAL -- The Canadiens were edged 4-3 in overtime by the Red Wings at the Bell Centre.

Thursday night's contest marked the return of goaltender Jake Allen, who was making his first start since January 7 after battling an upper-body injury.

Unfortunately, things didn't exactly start the way Allen and his teammates would've hoped.
Michael Rasmussen opened the scoring for Detroit just 3:53 into the first period.
But, head coach Martin St-Louis' contingent wasn't down for long.
Michael Pezzetta responded two minutes later with his third goal of the season to level the scoreline.
Rafael Harvey-Pinard and Alex Belzile collected the assists.

It was 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Shortly after the middle stanza began, the Canadiens announced that defenseman Joel Edmundson wouldn't be returning to the game after suffering a lower-body injury.
Jonatan Berggren gave the Red Wings a 2-1 with a power play at the 3:56 mark of the frame.
Three minutes later, though, Harvey-Pinard answered back with a short-handed tally for his second goal of the season.
Kirby Dach and David Savard assisted on the tally.

Oskar Sundqvist responded for Detroit at 13:30, before Harvey-Pinard tied things up with his second goal of the night five minutes later.
Michael Pezzetta and Alex Belzile picked up the helpers.

It was 3-3 after 40 minutes.
There were no goals to report in the third period, so overtime was required.
Robby Fabrri scored the game-winner in the extra frame.
Allen finished the game with 38 saves.
The Canadiens are back in action on Saturday night when they visit the Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata. Puck drop is 7:00 p.m. ET.
