On Wednesday, the Habs were in Pittsburgh, dropping a 5-3 decision to the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins.
Jonathan Drouin, Nikita Scherbak and Jacob de la Rose were the Montreal goalscorers at PPG Paints Arena, rallying back from an early 2-0 deficit to enter the final 20 tied 3-3, but Derick Brassard got the game-winner at 2:38 in the third.
The loss officially eliminated the Canadiens from playoff contention.
Carey Price meanwhile got his first start in over a month against the Pens, making 34 saves on 39 shots while returning from a concussion he suffered in Philadelphia on Feb. 20.
Head coach Claude Julien did not announce his starting goaltender in Buffalo, but Antti Niemi is expected to get the nod at the KeyBank Center.
Julien did however confirm a change up front, and Michael McCarron will sit out as a healthy scratch. At practice, Byron Froese took McCarron's spot on a line with Nicolas Deslauriers and Daniel Carr.
The Habs will hit the ice for a morning skate at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
At the other end of the ice, the Sabres are coming off a pair of 4-0 and 4-1 losses to Nashville and Arizona on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.
Buffalo is last in the NHL standings with 58 points this season, and the lowest-scoring offense in the league.
Former second-overall pick from 2015, Jack Eichel, leads the team with 22 goals and 32 assists, and is coming off his 200th career game on Wednesday.
Montreal and Buffalo have met three other times this season, with the Habs taking all three decisions.
Game time at the KeyBank Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and will be broadcast on TSN2, RDS, TSN690, and 98,5 fm in Canada.
