Canucks Announce 2020.21 Fan Hero Awards

Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Canucks are proud to announce the winners of the second annual Fan Hero Awards, presented by BCLC. The Fan Hero Awards were launched last April in place of the Annual Team Awards to recognize and celebrate the personal contributions made by everyday heroes in communities throughout BC.

Fan nominations for this year's Fan Hero Awards were collected between Monday, May 3 and Sunday, May 9.
The winners of this year's four Fan Hero Awards will be honoured during a pregame ceremony at the Canucks Frontline Workers Appreciation game on May 18, presented by BCLC. Additionally, their names will be worn on warmup jerseys by the Canucks players that won the corresponding Team Awards. The player-worn jerseys will be gifted to the fans afterwards.

CATEGORY: MVP - Individuals Making an Exceptional Difference

Everyday heroes, taking time out of their day to help others whenever they can. During these unprecedented times, they have stepped up to the challenge to help others wherever possible.
WINNER: BRYANA & MATTHEW THACKER

Bryana is a Respiratory Therapist, working daily in the intensive care unit, while Matthew is a Pediatric Registered Nurse as well as an Instructor at BCIT-helping on the frontline but also teaching future generations of the healthcare community. Bryana and Matthew are an incredible husband and wife team, and have kept amazing upbeat optimism during the pandemic. Their nominator noted that "hockey (and working in the medical field!) is their life!" with both having played competitively and in recreational leagues.

CATEGORY: UNSUNG HERO - Essential Services Worker

Never looking for attention, but always looking out for others, these individuals are keeping our communities operational through their tremendous efforts and dedication.
WINNER: JEN GENDRON

Jen works as the Activity Director at a Senior Care Facility, having transitioned to full-time when the pandemic began to make sure Seniors have activities to keep them occupied while they're unable to leave the facility, or welcome their families or other visitors inside. Described as her own nominator's hero, Jen also collaborates with the residents she cares for to make gifts for other vulnerable populations in the community.

CATEGORY: BEST DEFENCEMAN - Healthcare Worker or First Responder

Every day, these individuals are putting the needs of others first, standing on the front line, working tirelessly to keep us all safe.
WINNER: PRABHJOT DHILLON

Prabhjot is a Registered Nurse, supporting elderly patients by treating physical problems related to COVID-19, but also offering mental health support to address hardships that result from not being able to have visitors. She goes out of her way to set up FaceTime or phone calls so patients can connect with loved ones during a very difficult time.

CATEGORY: MOST EXCITING PLAYER - Local Small Business or Community Group

Jumping at the opportunity to help, these local businesses or groups have rallied together in their communities to provide aid and support, in any way possible.
WINNER: MOUNTAIN MARKET (MARY CHOI & STEVE LEE)

Steve and Mary run Mountain Market in North Vancouver, making sure to provide a safe place for people in their community to shop for essentials. They gift flower arrangements from their shop to frontline workers, and last spring gifted flower bouquets to Argyle Secondary graduates that missed their graduation due to the pandemic. Their nominator explains that "they love their community and are always looking for ways to give back as best they can!"
