Capitals Make Four Selections on Second Day of 2020 NHL Draft

The Washington Capitals selected right wing Bogdan Trineyev (117th overall), center Bear Hughes (148th overall), goaltender Garin Bjorklund (179th overall) and left wing Oskar Magnusson (211th overall) on the second day of the 2020 NHL Draft. On Tuesday, the Capitals selected center Hendrix Lapierre with the 22nd overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Trineyev, 18, was ranked seventh among European right wings and 19th overall among all forwards by NHL Central Scouting. The 6'3", 198-pound right wing registered 26 points (12g, 14a) in 36 games with Dynamo Moscow 2 in Russia's junior league. The Voronezh, Russia, native also won a gold medal at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, recording four points (2g, 2a) in four games. This season, Trineyev has played in five games with Dynamo Krasnogorsk in the Supreme Hockey League (SHL) and recorded six points (4g, 2a) in six games with Dynamo Moscow 2 in the Russian Junior League.

Hughes, 19, was ranked 40th among North American centers and 102nd overall among forwards by NHL Central Scouting. The 6'0", 171-pound center registered 47 points (16g, 31a) in 61 games with the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Hockey League (WHL), ranking sixth on the team in points and leading all rookie players. The Post Falls, Idaho, native ranked seventh among all rookie players in points in the WHL. During the 2018-19 season, Hughes recorded 66 points (41g, 25a) in 46 games with the Spokane Braves in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL), earning KIJHL Rookie of the Year honors.

Bjorklund, 18, was ranked fifth among North American goaltenders by NHL Central Scouting. The 6'2", 192-pound goaltender posted a 20-5-4 record, a 2.91 goals against average and a .897 save percentage in 28 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL. The Grande Prairie, Alta., native's 20 wins ranked third among rookie goaltenders in 2019-20. Bjorklund won an Alberta Midget AAA Championship with the Calgary Buffalos in 2018-19 where he registered a 1.76 goals against average and a .934 save percentage in 11 games.

Magnusson, 18, was ranked 11th among European born left wings and 29th among all forwards by NHL Central Scouting. The 5'10", 166-pound left wing recorded 48 points (22g, 26a) in 38 games with Malmo's Jr. team in the 2019-20 season and also appeared in four games for Malmo in the Swedish Hockey League. The Trelleborg, Sweden, native also won a bronze medal with Team Sweden at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, skating in five games. This season, Magnusson has appeared in three games with Malmo and has also recorded four assists in five games with Malmo's Jr. team.
