The mission of the
Anacostia Watershed Society
is to protect and restore the Anacostia River by bringing partners and communities together to achieve a clean and safe river for the benefit of all living in its watershed and for future generations. The vision is to restore and sustain the Anacostia as a swimmable and fishable river for the health and well-being of all by 2025 and beyond. The Anacostia Watershed Society's programs include environmental education, stewardship, recreation, and advocacy. Each year, they engage thousands of people through hands-on education programs, free weekly recreational opportunities on the river, and volunteer efforts to restore native habitat, remove trash, and prevent pollution in the river.
Washington Youth Garden (WYG) nurtures curious minds and healthy bodies by connecting youth to food, the land and each other. WYG began as a one-acre demonstration garden - now complete with fruits, vegetables and nature play features - on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) in 1971. Their work has expanded to include school gardens across the District of Columbia. Through these "garden classrooms," WYG offers hands-on environmental science and nutrition education to youth and families through four main program areas: SPROUT - field trips, Green Ambassadors - high school internships, Garden Science - school garden development and teacher training, and Family Garden Days. WYG is a program of the Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA), a 501(c)3 dedicated to enhancing support for educational, outreach and research programs that advance the mission of the U.S. National Arboretum.
