Today's activities all took place at Shougang Park, a location west of the city center. Shougang Park used to be a 100-year old steel factory but is no longer in use for that purpose.
Now, it is used primarily as the headquarters for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee and will be used as the site for the ski jumping event during the winter Olympics as well. After the tour of the grounds of the park, they took us up a hill to a temple that overlooked the entire site.
From there we went to the ice rink on the Shougang grounds where Ovi was on the ice with 40 local 12U and under hockey players for a clinic. He fed the player passes, shot pucks on the goalies and even played some fun on-ice games. They were understandably ecstatic to have him around and playing hockey with them.
Also on the ice at the clinic was Peter Zhong. Zhong is a Chinese native and current freshman on the Arizona State University hockey team. His squad is in Beijing for the week participating in ORG's hockey tournament. Zhong helped coached the clinic alongside Ovi and towards the end even fed No. 8 one-timers. He said it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and that he knows what having Ovi here this week means to the country and the game of hockey in China.
For dinner, Ovi went to one of the most famous restaurants in Beijing, DaDong, for a traditional peking duck dinner. The duck has been a delicacy served in China for centuries and is something that one should not leave China before trying.
