The event will feature on- and off-ice presentations featuring members of the Capitals coaching staff. 'Coaching Best Practices from 8U to Olympics,' a panel discussion hosted by Capitals alumnus and NBC Sports Washington analyst Craig Laughlin, will kick off the day, following breakout sessions.
Coaches are invited to watch the Capitals practice following Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette's practice plan. Post practice with feature remarks by Laviolette, followed by three presentations by members of the Capitals coaching staff and senior director of team and organizational development Dr. Aimee Kimball. A moderated Q&A session by members of Capitals coaching and player development staff will follow.
According to USA Hockey, overall there's been significant growth in youth participation in the D.C. area. Participation in the region has increased over the past five seasons to more than 22,100 players, coaches and officials. Since
Alex Ovechkin
was drafted, participation by youth players has increased by more than 200%. There are approximately 37 ice facilities in the area, with a total of 56 sheets of ice. The Capitals have also refurbished or built 14 rinks across Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia to further encourage the growth of the game.
