Hockey is a family affair for the Greenes. The family's oldest brother, Zave, first began playing hockey at the age of five when he was introduced to the sport by a family that lived in their Maryland neighborhood. Shortly thereafter, Zave, now 18, told his parents that he wanted to play ice hockey.

Since then, all three of the Greene Brothers, including Zave, Jovi (15) and Tyvan (9), have played hockey in the Washington area. Today, Jovi and Tyvan both play locally for the Montgomery Ice Devils, while Zave plays at the Taft School in Connecticut.
From bonding with one another to making lasting friendships with teammates, there is no doubt that hockey has had an indelible impact on the brothers and instilled a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunities it has provided.
"Our family has gained so much from the tight-knit hockey community and developed friendships that will last a lifetime," said Jovi. "Most of all, hockey is so much fun to play and has created some of the best memories in my entire life."
Given the many positive experiences that the family has enjoyed while playing the sport, the brothers have felt a special obligation to give back and help grow the game that means so much to them.
"As I got older and started playing outside of my home rink, it became clear that not everyone has the same opportunities to play hockey," explained Zave. "To grow the game as much as possible, I felt called to use the resources and opportunities I am so grateful for to help others who are not as fortunate as me."
Over the past three years, the Greenes have hosted two separate fundraising events aimed at giving back to the local community and encouraging greater participation in hockey. The first event the brothers organized was a 5k race to raise money to buy sports and hockey equipment for Twinbrook Elementary School in Rockville, Md. Following the success of the 5k, the boys hosted a relay event to help raise money for Twinbrook's field trip fund.
The brothers were in the midst of determining the beneficiary of their next fundraising event when they learned about the Capital Impact Fund and the support that it has provided to the local
Fort Dupont Cannons
hockey club. Zave, who previously played for Coach Duante' Abercrombie on the Washington Little Capitals, was immediately drawn toward the Impact Fund's mission and was eager to partner with the Capitals for this year's event.
As huge Capitals fans, the Greenes were thrilled to partner with the organization to support the Capital Impact Fund.
"The team was so receptive to our idea to partner and immediately saw that we could make an impact together," said Zave. "It's incredible to partner with the Caps, and their support is a testament to how committed they are to this cause."

Over the past week, the Greene brothers have been busy constructing a Plinko board that will be used in their fundraiser. Using the hockey rink-inspired board, which the brothers refer to as "Rinko", friends and family will be able to donate money for a chance to win prizes provided by the Capitals, including a John Carlson signed mini helmet, a Nicklas Backstrom signed puck and an Alex Ovechkin signed jersey. In addition, the brothers will be selling raffle tickets at the event to benefit the Impact Fund.
"I love playing hockey so much, and it makes me feel happy to know that we are helping other kids to be able to play too," added Tyvan, the youngest of the Greene brothers.
This year, the trio hope to raise $15,000 for the Impact Fund and have been steadfast in their commitment to achieving their goal.
"We believe in what the organization is doing and know that however much we raise will be used to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in the sport we all love - hockey," said Jovi.

The "Rinko" game and raffle will take place in a private event on July 2, however the brothers will be accepting donations online through a GoFundMe page they have created for the fundraiser. One hundred percent of the funds raised through the event and online will be donated directly to the Capital Impact Fund. For more information or to donate, please visit

In 2020 the Capitals organization and Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) Foundation created the Capital Impact Fund to provide grants to organizations that can assist in eliminating cost barriers faced by individuals of color in the hockey community. The fund is designed to help minority youth players reach their full potential and help create more equal playing fields for all.
