Funds from these license plate sales will not go to the Minnesota Wild corporate entity.
Can I switch from a standard license plate to a special license plate at any time?
Yes, you may change your plates at any time, though it is most convenient to change plates when renewing your annual registration.
Where can I see a list of available plates?
You can visit our website at drive.mn.gov. Click on News and Info, then click on the Forms/Documents/Manuals tab. Under the Forms and Documents section, click on Motor Vehicles, and then Special License Plate Brochure.
How much do special plates cost?
The cost is $15.50 for a pair of plates. A single plate, such as for a motorcycle, costs $13.50. Some special plates also require an annual contribution in addition to annual registration renewals. Contribution costs range from $5 to $60.
How do I order a special plate?
Special plates may be ordered at any motor vehicle office or online at drive.mn.gov. Under Vehicle Services, click on More Vehicle Services and then Change my Plates. Some plates are available over the counter at motor vehicle offices.
Where does the extra money for special plates go?
DVS distributes the funds to each plate’s sponsoring agency in accordance with state statute.
Can I walk into a DVS office and get a special plate that same day?
Some special plates are available over the counter. That currently includes the following plates: Support Our Troops, Critical Habitat (all nine designs), State Parks and Trails, Law Enforcement Memorial Association, Remembering Victims of Impaired Drivers and MN Golf. New plates may be added to the list as they are released.
Plates not stocked in offices can be ordered either at an office or online and sent directly to the customer. When applying at a motor vehicle office, a 60-day permit is provided for display until the plates are received if the current plates are expired or no longer on the vehicle.
How long does it take for a special plate to arrive if I order it online?
It typically takes two weeks to receive your special plate, provided it is not personalized or a disability plate.
Can special plates be personalized?
Yes, they can.
Can I get a special plate for my motorcycle?
Most special plates do allow for a motorcycle version; however, some categories have statutory restrictions. For instance Critical Habitat, Collegiate plates and some Veteran plates do not have motorcycle versions.
