11/11 Devils at Sabres: 3 Things We Learned

The Devils defeated the Sabres, 2-1, in overtime at Key Bank Center in Buffalo thanks to Yohann Auvitu's first NHL goal and Andy Greene's successful penalty shot in the extra session. Here's what we learned:
1) The Devils have taken head coach John Hynes' suggestion to shoot more to heart as they put up 40+ shots on goal for the second game in a row. Of 43 shots tonight, Taylor Hall had six and Beau Bennett and PA Parenteau each had five. Keith Kinkaid made 25 saves to get his second win of the season.

2) Even though they won their third in a row, the power play still needs some attention. The Devils are 0-15 over the past four games and that includes a 5-on-3 for 1:25 and a four minute double minor in tonight's game. In five opportunities tonight, they had 14 shots.
3) Winning faceoffs is another area of the Devils game that could be a bit stronger. Usually, they're a 50/50 team, but tonight they won a total of three faceoffs in the first period for a 19% win rate. To their credit, they pulled it together in the final two periods to finish with 29 wins, good for 48%. As Hynes preaches daily, it's hard to control puck possession when you don't win faceoffs.
The Devils (7-3-3) will host the rematch tomorrow night as both teams head to Jersey for the second half of this back-to-back, home-and-home series. The Devils will be looking for their fourth consecutive win and to remain unbeaten in regulation at home.
