Greene Release

Defenseman Andy Greene, who spent 14 seasons of his 16-year NHL career with New Jersey, today signed a one-day contract with the New Jersey Devils and announced his retirement from the National Hockey League. Greene and his family will continue to reside in New Jersey and Andy will work with the organization at certain points throughout the year as his schedule permits.
To his family, friends, colleagues and fans, Andy released the following statement:

"Coming out of Miami University in 2006, as an undrafted free agent, I was lucky enough to sign an NHL contract with the New Jersey Devils. In January of 2007, I fulfilled my dream and played my first NHL game. As I sit here 16 years later, it still seems surreal that I was one of the fortunate ones who got to do what I had dreamed of when I was five-years old.
"I've been told that I was born to play hockey. My mom went into labor with me on the way to one of my older brother's hockey games. I think that was a sign. Dad, I think about you every day and can't thank you enough for all the life lessons you have taught me and that I now pass onto my sons. Mom, you have been there every step of the way with your unconditional love and support. To my three older brothers and their families, you guys paved the way for me to get into hockey, but also gave me what any young brother would want and that's love.
"I want to thank the New Jersey Devils organization, for giving me my first day and last day in the NHL. You have treated not only me, but more importantly my family, with nothing but love and respect and I will be forever grateful for that. Thank you also to the New York Islanders organization for the past two and a half years."
"Thank you to all my former coaches, trainers, and everyone in team services. I am so grateful for all the effort and support you have given me, and I will always be indebted to you.
"Thank you to all my former teammates. You guys always made coming to the rink fun, challenging, and rewarding. I will cherish all the memories we made over the years, but more importantly the friendships that will last a lifetime. I wouldn't be here today without you guys and wish you nothing but the best going forward,
"To the fans. Your support means the world to me. There is nothing better than coming out of the tunnel for a game and not being able to hear yourself think. Without you, there is no game.
"Finally, to my beautiful wife Rachel, I can't thank you enough for your continued selflessness for not only our family, but for my career. I can't wait for this next phase our lives and what the future has in store for us. Colton and Maddox, you two continue to amaze me with your kindness, big smiles, and I love watching you grow every day."
"Andy Greene was everything we wanted as a player, leader and individual to represent our team and the entire New Jersey Devils organization," said David Blitzer and Josh Harris, co-Managing Partners of the New Jersey Devils. "Throughout his career, Andy's everyday professional attitude and work ethic epitomized what we strive for as a franchise. He showed what it is to be a captain both on and off the ice, and for that, together with his consistency as a player, we were and continue to be lucky to have him as a life-long Devil. As they continue to make New Jersey their home, the doors to Prudential Center are always open to Andy, his wife Rachel, and their boys."
"Andy was a bedrock for New Jersey during his 14 years and developed into an exceptional leader and what it meant to be a Devil," said Tom Fitzgerald, Executive Vice President/General Manager, New Jersey Devils. "He was a consummate professional when times were hard and a representation to his teammates in the locker room. It's only right that he announces his retirement from the National Hockey League as a member of the Devils and we thank him for all that he's done on and off the ice for the organization. As he stays in New Jersey we know he will be around the Prudential Center on his own schedule, but now can spend time with his wife, Rachel, and sons, Colton and Maddox."

In 14 seasons with New Jersey, he has appeared in 923 games scoring 49 goals and 197 assists for 246 points while registering 259 penalty minutes.
