Severson Traded to Columbus Details

he New Jersey Devils today traded defenseman Damon Severson to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft (originally Calgary's selection acquired by Columbus via Seattle, 80th overall). Severson was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and signed an eight-year contract prior to the trade.

Severson, 28, was New Jersey's second-round selection and 60th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft and was the longest-tenured Devil on the roster this season. In nine seasons from 2014-15 to 2022-23, he appeared in 647 games scoring 58 goals and 205 assists for 263 points while registering 388 penalty minutes. Severson skated in 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games for the Devils, scoring one goal and two assists with six penalty minutes.

With the addition of the third-round pick, New Jersey now has six selections in the 2023 NHL Draft. The club also has its own picks in rounds two, four, five, six and seven.
